Today I had a fantastic conversation with the inspiring Dame Sally Davies, UK Special Envoy on Antimicrobial Resistance, at Clinton Global Initiative about AMR. At PATH, we recognize AMR as a global threat, claiming an estimated 1.27 million lives in 2019. Climate change and other crises are further exacerbating this issue. That's why PATH advocates for a One Health approach, acknowledging the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. Prevention is key. Vaccines remain one of our most effective tools, and PATH's Center for Vaccine Innovation and Access (CVIA) has been a leader in global immunization efforts for decades. Additionally, strengthening of diagnostics and surveillance is crucial to track resistance patterns and enable rapid responses. Governments, global organizations, and private sector must partner and come together with communities to: Strengthen immunization and diagnostics Invest in new antibiotic research Secure sustained funding for AMR prevention and response Address antibiotics misuse across sectors Now during #UNGA79, I'm feeling energized and optimistic that we can tackle AMR together - and safeguard global health for future generations. With the number of cholera cases and outbreaks surging, we need to be able to manufacture more oral cholera vaccine (OCV). Working with the Gates Foundation and EuBiologics, IVI has helped to develop a simplified OCV (Euvichol-S). The simplified OCV is non-inferior to the older version, but can be made in larger quantities for a lower price. This also has the benefit of making the vaccine easier to technology transfer (and work to tech transfer OCV-S to other companies is ongoing). With the stockpile of OCV depleted, the demand for vaccine increasing, and with an official reduction from two doses to a single dose because of the shortage of OCV, IVI and its partners are working from innovation to impact, lowering cost, increasing supply, and supporting regional manufacturing initiatives!
A new study led by IVI and collaborators published in The Lancet Global Health shows that Euvichol-S, a simplified oral cholera vaccine (OCV), is non-inferior to the first-generation OCV Shanchol™ in a Phase 3 trial conducted in Nepal. Based on the results of this study, Euvichol-S achieved World Health Organization prequalification earlier this year, paving the way for its global use in endemic and outbreak settings. Entrepreneurial commercial leader passionate about combining profit and purpose, finding the two way value exchange between business and customer, and building happy and empowered teams.
📢 Our new Vaccines and Public Health business unit came together at a 2 day offsite last week! We celebrated our 130-year legacy, recapping our pioneering history in researching and developing vaccines and treatments to tackle infectious disease. Vaccines and antimicrobials are integral components of #PublicHealth management strategies that contribute to disease prevention, control, and the overall health security of the nation. Our whole team is motivated by the prospect of disease elimination and are actively partnering to eliminate cervical cancer, measles, and hepatitis C in the UK, ensuring that regardless of background, no one is left behind. Here are 3 things that I learnt from a fabulous 2 days with the team: · The importance of #partnerships - As facilitators of positive change, we're working to accelerate innovative ways of delivering healthcare, be it through catalysing implementation of the NHS Vaccination Strategy, sharing good practice, or encouraging innovative ways of purchasing antibiotics to tackle the global threat of antimicrobial resistance. We recognise that we have an important part to play and know that we cannot achieve our purpose alone. Effective partnerships and collaborations are critical to fuelling innovation! #HealthcareInnovation · Intergenerational teams bring a powerful blend of experience, fresh perspectives, and diverse skill sets. The wonderful Kate Richardson-Walsh OLY OBE shared how her Olympic hockey team came together to win bronze at the London Olympics in 2012 and finally gold at Rio 2016. A major component for success was that every member of the team felt a sense of belief and belonging. We work every day to cultivate an environment, so that everyone brings their best selves to work and allows us to solve the big issues together, including reducing the inequities that exist across vaccination coverage rates to meet the public health ambition. · Executional excellence is a team game - Trusting in each other creates fertile ground for innovation, collaboration, and a thriving work environment. From meticulous planning to flawless implementation, I’m proud to be part of a team that consistently delivers outstanding outcomes. #TeamSuccess I am so excited to work with our wonderful team in this exciting space #msdintheuk
