In 2019, 24% of BIPOC respondents weren't interested in becoming an Executive Director/CEO of a nonprofit. Just three years later, this percentage climbed to 32%. What changed? Part of the answer can be found in Building Movement Project's 2022 report, Trading Glass Ceilings for Glass Cliffs, which found that “ascending to an executive position does not end a leader’s struggle with racism, and sometimes increases those struggles”. Women in Leadership: Women on city councils in major cities increased having majority female representation, up from zero in 2016. This shift towards more diverse leadership could impact local government policies and priorities. Tenure Trends: Tenure of city council members has decreased, suggesting new ideas and perspectives entering the political landscape. Female Representation: From 31% in 2016 to 47% in 2024 across large cities. Decreased Tenure: Average tenure dropped from 6.2 years in 2016 to 4.7 years in 2024.
