5 Examples of Internet of Things That Are Changing the World The internet of things (IoT) is a term that describes the network of physical objects that are connected to the internet and can communicate with each other and with humans. IoT devices can range from smart home appliances to wearable gadgets to industrial machines. They can collect, process, and share data, as well as perform actions based on commands or conditions. IoT devices can also use artificial intelligence (AI) to learn from their data and improve their performance. IoT is not a new concept, but it has become more prevalent and powerful in recent years, thanks to the advances in wireless connectivity, cloud computing, and AI. IoT has the potential to transform various aspects of our lives, such as health, education, transportation, agriculture, and entertainment. In this article, I’ll share with you five examples of popular IoT that are changing the world for the better. 1. Smart Cities Smart cities are urban areas that use digital technologies to enhance the quality of life, sustainability, and economic development of their residents. By collecting and analyzing data from various sources, such as sensors, devices, and citizens, smart cities can optimize the use of resources, improve service delivery, and increase citizen engagement. Some of the benefits of smart cities are: More effective, data-driven decision-making: Smart cities can leverage big data and artificial intelligence to monitor and measure key performance indicators, such as traffic, air quality, energy consumption, and public safety. This enables city officials to make informed decisions based on real-time data and evidence, rather than assumptions or intuition. For example, smart traffic management systems can reduce congestion and emissions by adjusting traffic signals, rerouting vehicles, and providing information to drivers and public transport users.
