At the onset of 2023, the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) conducted a comprehensive survey among its members, shedding light on pivotal industry trends. Remarkably, 88% of surveyed engineers asserted that sustainability holds paramount importance in their designs—labeling it as either 'extremely important' or 'somewhat important.' This marks a substantial increase from the 54% recorded in 2018, indicative of a discernible industry-wide commitment to sustainable practices. In contrast, the client perspective, as revealed by the survey, presents a nuanced narrative. While the figure has increased to 27% of clients considering sustainability a primary factor alongside efficiency and cost (compared to a mere 3% in 2018), there remains room for elevated consideration of sustainable design in client decision-making. The crux of the matter lies in aligning our sustainability endeavors with the priorities of our clients. The key? Ensuring that sustainability designs are not only environmentally conscientious but also economically prudent. This necessitates candid and early-stage conversations with clients, presenting a comprehensive overview of the risks and benefits associated with such designs. In the pursuit of a sustainable future, engineers stand at the forefront of transformative change. By integrating sustainability into the early stages of design discussions, we not only respond to the industry's evolving ethos but also position ourselves as catalysts for meaningful change. In collaboration with our Sustainability Consultant and the Architect of Record during a recent engagement on a post-secondary school project, we successfully implemented multiple strategies to reduce the embodied carbon intensity of the project. In optimizing the concrete mix, working to eliminate a significant building transfer and using post-tensioned concrete slabs, the team achieved a remarkable 17% reduction in embodied carbon throughout the entirety of the structure. Closely coordinated adjustments to the parkade column layout facilitated the implementation of a streamlined one-way beam system at Level 1, replacing the conventional two-way slab system and providing significant reductions to the embodied carbon intensity. These strategic modifications are estimated to have mitigated approximately 4200 tonnes CO2e emissions associated with the concrete structure, representing a significant 17% reduction in the building's total structural carbon footprint. This collaborative, solutions-based reduction strategy underscores our commitment to providing significant embodied carbon reductions on our projects and highlights the tangible material and cost reductions we continuously provide our clients.
