Is it an advantage to remain systems agnostic when building your career within finance systems? When discussing career moves with those working in legal finance systems, the majority of people, in my experience, prefer to continue working with the same practice management system they’re using currently. It makes sense. They’ve developed specialist knowledge which can be highly sought after and no longer using that will feel counter-productive. Learning a whole new system may feel like regression too, especially when joining a team who will all be familiar with it already. But are there tangible advantages to having a deep understanding of, for example, Elite 3E and Aderant? Would hiring managers consider this favourably when comparing applications? So, that’s my first month down as in-house corporate counsel. Moving from private practice to in-house has been quite the change. The absence of timesheets is always a big plus ✅ (of course), but I do truly feel that I’m learning so much already. A few stand out lessons so far: 1️⃣ Get up close and personal with the industry: I work in the telecommunications industry now, and I’m starting to see how truly technical and niche this industry is, compared to the broader level of knowledge required for private practice. Doing things like visiting physical sites to properly understand how systems work or picking the brains of colleagues in engineering, project management or sales really helps with understanding the subtleties and flow of the industry. This is something I actively try to implement. 2️⃣ Eat the frog 🐸 (what??) - yes, eat the frog (for your team, to be specific). This means: 🔷 Excel in your current role. 🔷 Identify tasks your team is stretched thin on. 🔷 Master those tasks. 🔷 Execute them impeccably. Like I said, it’s been a month, and so far I’m loving it. Any seasoned in-house practitioners out there with additional tips? I'm all ears! 👂 #inhousecounsel
