Every year, there are around 10,500 new pancreatic cancer cases in the UK, yet only 10% of patients with this cancer are diagnosed in time for life-saving surgery. And across the UK, 52% of people know ‘almost nothing’ about this deadly disease, whilst 76% can’t name a single symptom.  With public awareness levels so low, Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month is vital in the fight to raise awareness of the symptoms and to ensure early diagnosis and save lives. In lung cancer, time is critical - early detection and rapid treatment are key to enabling patients to live longer. This is how we take the fear out of lung cancer as a "silent killer" and enable access to care for patients - whether in low-income or high-income countries, and no matter where in the world. Together with Michael Fung-Kee-Fung, Dr. Donna Maziak, Professor, Department of Surgery, University of Ottawa, Ticiana Leal, Clarissa Mathias, Dr. Tracy Irura, Andrew Duda, Murry W. Wynes and David LeDuc, it was a pleasure to work on the whitepaper "Optimising access to care through timely referral pathways". It focuses on the lung cancer patient pathway and provides recommendations for policy action: improving patient and physician awareness, improving infrastructure and capacity, defining the pathway and supporting effective navigation, improving access to therapies.
