Sometimes I wonder if people really understand what recruiters do. 💃 We source. 💃 We review resumes. 💃 We select resumes and send them to hiring managers. 💃 We talk with candidates. 💃 We coach candidates. (I want to make offers and see people in jobs!) 💃 We interview. 💃 We reject. 💃 We write job descriptions. 💃 We post job descriptions. 💃 We schedule interviews. 💃 We document notes about candidates and status updates in ATS systems and spreadsheets. 💃 We partner with hiring managers and inform them where candidates are every step of the way. 💃 We counsel hiring managers and make recommendations. 💃 We advocate for candidates. 💃 We discuss compensation and often with candidates and the entire hiring team. 💃 We negotiate offers and are in the middle between hiring managers and candidates. 💃 We give verbal offers to candidates. 💃 We send offers to candidates. 💃 We send onboarding. 💃 We work with immigration teams and send in immigration information for candidates to get them set up. 💃 We close candidates and ensure they are set up for success with their team. 💃 We work on future roles. 💃 Some of us hire and fire I've done both when I was in staffing. 💃 We will sit in on meetings with HR business partners and will partner with them keeping them informed on any updates that are happening within an org. Recruiters in many ways are talent business partners. It is a lot of work even when you do it right. And even if you do everything right something can go wrong. People can change their minds and decide to go somewhere else. Some candidates use job offers as bargaining to get a better job offer where they currently are at. Or sometimes hiring teams will take too long and a candidate will change their mind and take another offer. Sending love to all the recruiting orgs out there wherever you are working. I see you. You matter. Hang in there. 2023 has been a dumpster fire pit in many ways but we will get through this together! ‘We’re struggling to fill this position. It’s been open for months’ I often receive calls from hiring managers who are looking for help and advice on roles they’re struggling to fill. The labour market is very tight at the moment and the demand for talented individuals that can make a positive impact has never been greater. However, when I speak with some hiring managers, they don’t always realise the landscape of the jobs market and some of the mistakes they’re making in their talent attraction and recruitment processes. I understand that sometimes there are very niche positions that will take a long time to fill, but are you doing everything you can to get the right person for your business? To anyone who is experiencing difficulties in hiring the right person for a role, have a look at my tips on how to turn it around 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐦𝐩 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚✍️ Is what you're looking for realistic? Sometimes we need to take stock and question ourselves. Does the person I’m looking for exist? Be clear and concise about what you need and be willing to be flexible. 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐬 🤝 Your current employees are often the best ambassadors for your company. Let your colleagues and connections know you’re hiring and you’ve found it tough getting someone for the position. A referral is very powerful and candidates are likelier to trust people they’ve worked with. 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐨𝐨𝐥 🌐 Tap into diverse talent pools and non-traditional candidates. Don’t have a rigid picture of what you want. Show a degree of flexibility and consider candidates in the industry who are in other positions that may have transferrable skills. 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 💰🌐 This is a big stumbling block for some companies. Research the market and make sure your offering is competitive. If you have salary constraints, think about the soft benefits you can offer. Be creative with your offering and ensure you’re marketing all your perks. 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐇𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 ⏱️ Time kills the recruitment process! Reduce the time it takes to make hiring decisions by streamlining your interview and selection process. Keep candidates informed and engaged throughout the process so they know where they stand. 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 📚 You can’t always do this, but if you have the luxury, be open to hiring candidates with potential and provide them with the training they need. You’ll be surprised how quickly an intelligent and driven person will develop and get up to speed.
