At a good and inspiring Day 1 at the AESIS conference on Societal Impact of Scientific Research in Dublin, three points resonated particularly well with me: 1) "Start by creating relationships to create impact", 2) "Ask not if it's perfect, but ask if it's better", and 3) "Let's talk about what 'indicates impact' rather than 'impact indicators' ". I made new friends and reconnected with old friends - so looking very much forward to the next couple of days :-) #IOS24, AESIS Network, #impact, #research, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH, University College Dublin, Anika Suzanne Duut van Goor

Take advantage of this great opportunity and join us for the 46th Annual Conference of the Association for Interdisciplinary Studies. "Interdisciplinary Bridge Building: Reconnection and Traversal. International and on-line conference September 27 & 28, 2024 https://lnkd.in/ePXHgx88 Submission deadline: June 11, 2024 Interdisciplinarity can be imagined as a space or environment, constructed or organic, that sometimes arises out of interdisciplinary responses to forms of polarization, fragmentation, specialization, and the divides between practices, theories and scientific cultures. This year’s virtual conference seeks proposals that explore the structures, theories, and practices of (re)connection, e.g., the bridge, traverse, rhizome, etc., that result in active knowledge creation, new pedagogies, and the re-imagining of the communities they connect. As a virtual conference, we welcome traditional formats such as the short paper, roundtable, and panel, as well as proposals for sessions that may model the activities they present, such as unsessions*, and interactive workshops, as well as presentations designed to encourage participants’ active engagement. *Unsessions: You are welcome to “un-session” a topic you’d like to learn more about or discuss; if you want to workshop an idea or have a question you’d like to discuss, or if you want to explore something new, propose an “un-session” where participants build knowledge and ideas together, and the session leader does not have to be an expert in the field but instead guides the session in discussion and knowledge-building. "As a funder, we can set out our ambitions, but it will be our grant-holders & partners who will refine the research questions. We encourage you all to come forward with the most salient and urgent research questions society needs to answer." 🗣 Tim Gardam, CEO, Nuffield Foundation Through our new programme, we want to work with you to define our future priorities. Hear more about the programme, and how you can help shape our agenda, in this blog from our CEO: https://lnkd.in/eN85KEPP
🎉Today we are launching a major new events programme to mark our 80th anniversary. Changing lives for the better: priorities for the next 20 years, will help us to establish our future areas of focus, determine the urgent research questions that need to be answered and contribute to the creation of a new strategic direction for the Foundation. Starting in July, the year-long programme is an opportunity to work closely with our centres - the Ada Lovelace Institute Nuffield Council on Bioethics and Nuffield Family Justice Observatory - and new and existing partners, to shape the Foundation's thinking and ensure we identify and fund the research ideas that most need our support in the years ahead. The Changing lives for the better programme will run a series of events on the societal, economic, scientific and technological shocks and opportunities that we anticipate will have the biggest impacts on people. The discussions we have and the learning we share will help to inform our future strategy. We will also conduct a stakeholder survey to gather wider opinions. Since 1943, the research we fund and the organisations we support have demonstrated the power of evidence to change lives. Now, looking ahead, we will use what we learn to renew our purpose and set the Foundation on its future path. Join us on the journey. Humanity stands on the shoulders of its ancestors. Our world, our societies, democracies, cities, bodies and minds have been formed by the generations before us. Just like the generations before us have shaped the world we live in; we are shaping the world future generations will live in. Therefore, it makes sense to consider how our actions today affect the health and wellbeing of future generations. I am honored to start as first Future Generations Commissioner at AmsterdamUMC and stimulate thinking about the long term. Advocate for the interest of future generations, and translating scientific insights into policies and practice that contribute to the health of current and future generations across Amsterdam UMC and beyond. My new role will be about making connections: connecting our past to our future. Connecting science to society. Connecting policy to practice. Connecting disciplines. But most importantly, connecting people. It will be a learning experience for me, and I look forward to making new connections, and learning from people's experiences. Together we are laying the foundations for the world in which future generations will live.

Join #SPF23 (👉https://lnkd.in/gerV4JaZ) and develop more tools to plan a life in research. It's time to reshape how we think about research success. 🗣 💬 Reframing Research Success: Part 1 (Nov 8, 1-2.30 pm AEDT) In today's evolving research landscape, it's becoming evident that relying solely on bibliometrics to measure research success is outdated and perhaps unfit for our modern needs. This system, centered almost entirely on citation metrics, has shown clear pitfalls. The emphasis on highly cited articles has resulted in missed opportunities and has even led some to game the system. Despite no concrete evidence linking citation metrics to quality research, this methodology persists both in Australia and globally. This will be an enlightening panel discussion on current efforts in Australia and beyond to revamp how we measure research success. We're privileged to host representatives from Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA), Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI), and Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment . They'll shed light on their ongoing efforts to develop robust frameworks for a fairer assessment of research impact. Let's champion change together! 📚🔍 Reframing Research Success: Part 2 (Nov 9, 12-1.30 pm AEDT) #EMCRs stand at the forefront of tomorrow's innovations. Recognising their vital role and the unique perspective they bring, we're thrilled to present a workshop dedicated to the EMCR viewpoint. This workshop, facilitated by AAMRI, delves deep into the application of Program Logic in charting out research impact and trajectory. It's not just about moving from one grant to another. Instead, we're fostering a discussion that encourages EMCRs to see their careers through a more expansive lens—one that captures the essence of a lifetime's work in research. Join us as we collaborate, learn, and pave the way for a future where we truly value and integrate the voice and vision of our emerging research leaders. #Success #STEMcareers #research #EMCRFuture #HolisticResearch #BeyondGrants #Success #STEMcareers #research #ResearchReform #RedefiningResearchSuccess #InclusiveMetrics

Share and sign the letter support for a NSF grant to address #mentalhealth concerns in #academia. Much of the emphasis as of late has been on a growing culture that many of us feel unnerved about in science. Data transparency, and openness can address some of these issues, but it doesn’t address the heart of why fundamental problems may exist in #science. We need tools to help researchers deal with uncertainty that exists in the market. We need tools that make #scientists believe that they’re good enough. If you believe that we can fundamentally change scientific culture with tools and community, sign the letter of support for the R3ciprocity project. 117 already have. Let’s #changescience. It’s time for a new era focused on empathy and compassion. https://chng.it/G26SfWQGCP
