We're launching the first Fishery Improvement Project in El Salvador! We are thrilled to announce that we were awarded $25,000 in grant funding from the Resource Legacy Fund and another $15,000 from a private family foundation to launch the first Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP) in El Salvador! Building off the success of Asociación Cincahuite’s Pesca Limpia (Clean Fishing) initiative, this multi-year project will engage five artisanal fishing cooperatives to collect much needed data on ecological indicators and fishing efforts. The goal is not just to determine sustainable scale, minimize environmental impacts, and provide effective management, but also to ensure human rights and social responsibility standards are met while building new markets and economic opportunities. We’re currently $10,000 shy of our $50,000 budget for the first year of the FIP. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) announced funding totalling $1.52 million, under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, for 26 projects aimed at revitalizing traditional food systems, increasing food security, training and resource development, and expanding Indigenous participation in Manitoba’s growing agriculture and agri-food sectors. SFP's Supply Chain Roundtables (SRs) bring together major #seafood buyers and suppliers to work together pre-competitively to scale-up #sustainability in specific seafood sectors. 2023 was as busy as ever, with SFP's SRs continuing to expand seafood sectory sustainability efforts. Some highlights included: ▶️ SFP’s U.S. Gulf of Mexico Shrimp SR celebrated the news that the AMERICAN SHRIMP PROCESSORS ASSOCIATION entered the U.S. Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery into sustainability assessments under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Certified Seafood Collaborative (CSC) Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification programs. ▶️ Stakeholders from the Mauritanian #octopus #fishery, supported by SFP’s Global Octopus SR, signed an MoU to establish a fishery improvement project (FIP) in the fishery and begin defining a workplan and activities. ▶️ The Global Roundtable on Marine Ingredients, which was launched by SFP and IFFO – The Marine Ingredients Organisation, released a human rights impact assessment (HRIA) of the small pelagic fish value chain in Senegal and Mauritania. The report identifies several actual and potential #humanrights impacts that the roundtable is committed to working toward addressing. 🛥️ It's Sustainable Seafood Week! 🛥️ This week we’ll be highlighting WA fisheries that supply us with world-class, sustainable seafood. The Abrolhos Island and Mid-West Scallop Fishery has recently achieved MSC certification and is the first scallop fishery in Australia to gain this certification. The independent assessment found the fishery was well-managed and supported by strong science from the WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. Management measures include a limited number of licenses, set seasonal closures, specified gear types, and catch limits determined by an annual stock survey. The Rottnest Island Scallop Fishery works closely with DPIRD to ensure their harvests are sustainable, with yearly surveys to determine the health of the local scallop population. They are also a part of a Fisheries Research and Development Corporation project that concentrates on rearing juvenile scallops to be released in the wild that will enhance the overall health of the scallop fishery. #sustainableseafoodweek Western Australian Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC)
