Pro-Interview Tip… Don’t GHOST the interviewer after your interview! I see so many applicants disappear after their interview. No follow-up thank you note. No checking in to see if a hiring decision has been made. They just vanish. I know you applicants don’t like it when an employer ghosts you, so don’t do the same back. Instead… ✔️ Send a thank you note immediately when your interview is over. It leaves an incredibly positive impression with the hiring manager. ✔️ If you are waiting for a hiring decision and the timeline you were given for a decision has passed, follow up with an inquiring email. Let the hiring manager know you are still very interested in the job, offer to provide them any additional information they may need about your candidacy, and see if they have made a hiring decision. ✔️ If you are unsuccessful, again, THANK the interviewer for their time and express interest in future opportunities. You never know what opportunities may present themselves. Polite, professional follow-up keeps you in mind and instills a lasting GOOD impression. Should you write a thank you note after a job interview? ... YES! Is it possible that no one will read it, or even care? Yep. Will writing a thank you note hurt your candidacy? Of course not! If you really want this job, even knowing it might not help, is it worth your time? Absolutely. Throughout my career, I've noticed that everyone seems to have a different opinion on the effectiveness of thank-you notes in the interview process. The truth is, I haven't come across any hiring managers or recruiters who "expect" a thank you note. In fact, I haven't EVER heard anyone say, "Well, out of these two candidates, let's hire the one who sent a thank you note!" Still, sending a thank you note is always a good strategy. It can help you stay top-of-mind as they make their hiring decision. It can demonstrate your enthusiasm and suitability for the role. It can be a catalyst that helps the process move along more quickly. It's a small gesture that only takes a few moments but can yield big results. The Bottom Line: After a job interview, always send a follow-up email with a sincere thank you and a reminder of what makes you a great candidate. Recently, I had the opportunity to interview for a part-time position that I was genuinely excited about. Like many job seekers, I poured time and effort into preparing for the interview, eager to showcase my skills and experience. During the interview, I was informed that they were considering multiple candidates but assured that regardless of the outcome, I would be notified the following week. However, four weeks have passed, and I have yet to receive any communication from them. Despite reaching out there has been no response. As a job seeker, this experience has left me feeling really disappointed and quite annoyed. Recruiters and hiring managers, please understand that job applicants' time is as precious as yours. We invest energy and resources into the application and interview process, hoping for transparency and respect in return. While I understand that decisions take time, a simple courtesy of communication goes a long way. Even a brief update or acknowledgment would provide closure and allow us to move forward in our job search journey.
