Lookin’s scanners utilize a patented nanoplasmonic terahertz source and detector technology that increases the sensitivity of terahertz scanning systems and allows the development of the first multi-pixel time-domain terahertz scanning platform. After the realization of a high scan-rate and large field-of-view terahertz scanner, Lookin is targeting the lithium-ion battery market for the initial commercialization of this platform technology. The individual depicted in the photo is Pyotr Ufimtsev, a little-known mathematician whose contributions for a long time stayed under the radar, quite literally. In the 1960s, he joined a Soviet electronic warfare unit. Electronic warfare is about electromagnetic waves, so Ufimtsev focused his research on the interaction of electromagnetic waves with two- and three-dimensional surfaces. Ufimtsev’s results were remarkable yet apparently completely impractical. In fact, his superiors held such a low regard for his research that they permitted him to publish the results completely unclassified in his 1962 paper, "Method of Edge Waves in the Physical Theory of Diffraction." About a decade later, the U.S. Air Force's Foreign Technology Division translated Ufimtsev's work into English. At the time, the Air Force faced a critical challenge: American military planes were falling prey to homing missiles in Vietnam at an alarming rate. In the event of a full-scale war, NATO risked losing its airpower in the first days or weeks of the conflict. With no straightforward solution, the military ventured into more unconventional territory. Homing missiles depended on a robust radar signal to approach an enemy target before switching to an internal seeker. The solution seemed to lie in making a plane invisible to radar. But how can you make something as big as a plane invisible? Engineers at Lockheed Martin Advanced Development Company, a.k.a. Skunk Works, realized that solving Comrade Ufimtsev's equations achieved exactly that. The computational power at the time only allowed for solutions on flat surfaces, resulting in the initial prototype, called the Hopeless Diamond, resembling a Cybertrack. During the first demo, the inspectors did not expect much, thinking the concept was still too theoretical. They were shocked that the radar did not register the prototype at all, while showing a bird that conveniently landed on top of the aircraft. Years later, this prototype evolved into a series of stealth aircraft, affording the U.S. a coveted decades-long technological edge against its adversaries. Ufimtsev, now 92, rightfully earned recognition as the father of Stealth.
