Patient-centered physician-led innovation has been at the core of Kaiser Permanente since our founding nearly 80 years ago. Dr. Sidney R. Garfield, the physician founder of Kaiser Permanente, was a surgeon and visionary always on the next frontier of medicine—from pioneering prepayment in the 1930s to being one of the first to embrace the computer as a tool to improve medicine in the 1960s. The Sidney R. Garfield, MD Exceptional Contribution Award recognizes exemplary members of The Permanente Medical Group, Inc. who embody this legacy. This year, we celebrate: Jitesh Vasadia, MD, for improving patient health through an innovative method to better track and manage a common heart medication, amiodarone, which is used for treating cardiac rhythm disorders. Bonnie Quiroz, MD, and Gregg Gayre, MD for revolutionizing how our doctors use digital imaging to diagnose, treat and monitor eye conditions to prevent vision loss, setting a standard lauded by the American Academy of Ophthalmology as the model in the field. Gregory Marelich, MD for pioneering a TeleCritical Care program that helps ICU patients and their families rest easier with round-the-clock life-saving response from physicians and nurses. We applaud Drs. Vasadia, Gayre, Quiroz, and Marelich and look forward to seeing their continued work to improve health and care for their communities. #KPProud https://lnkd.in/gkQ4ipcN

Shared decision-making plays an integral role in improving people’s experience of care and their quality of life. It is an invitation for people receiving care to be actively engaged in an informed conversation and a collaborative process with their healthcare professional(s) to reach a joint decision about care. However, despite recommendations in several valvular heart disease clinical guidelines across the globe, too often, people living with heart valve disease are still not being optimally involved in conversations about their treatment options and preferences. Global Heart Hub has published a new roadmap that provides patient organizations, patient advocates, and healthcare professionals with the knowledge and guidance needed to make shared decision-making a reality for people living with heart valve disease. The roadmap was created in collaboration with 19 multidisciplinary experts from around the world, including heart valve disease patients and advocates, along with cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, researchers, and nurses. 🔍 Innovative Patient-Centric Care: Heart Team Conferences with Patient Presence ❤️ Imagine a world where those facing complex heart decisions aren't just patients, but valued partners 🤝 in their own care. It's time to break down the walls of the traditional Heart Team Conference and invite the patient into the room. 🏥 Why? Because it's about more than medical expertise – it's about understanding the person behind the diagnosis. 🩺 1️⃣ Decisions Made Together: By combining clinical guidelines with the patient's unique story, we create care plans that truly fit their life. 📝 This isn't just empowerment; it's giving patients the knowledge they need to take charge of their health. 💪 2️⃣ A Team United: Cardiologists, Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Interventional Cardiologists – all coming together, all focused on one person. 🙌 This eliminates fragmented care, ensuring every aspect of the patient's well-being is addressed with a unified, compassionate approach. 💖 3️⃣ Beyond the Guidelines: Guidelines are essential, but they can't capture the nuances of an individual's life. By listening to their experiences, preferences, and values, we craft treatments that respect their journey and goals. 🛣️ 4️⃣ Healthier Hearts, Happier Lives: Shared decision-making leads to higher patient satisfaction, better treatment adherence, and ultimately, improved outcomes. 😊 It's about building trust, transparency, and a partnership that extends far beyond the conference room. 🤝 Let's Make This Happen: Let's champion this innovative approach that places the patient's voice at the heart of every decision. ❤️ By integrating patients into Heart Team Conferences, we're not just transforming cardiac care – we're creating a model for truly patient-centered healthcare. 🌍 Join the movement and share this post! Let's advocate for a future where patients are not just recipients of care, but active participants in shaping their own health journeys. 📢 #HeartTeamConference #PatientCenteredCare #HealthcareInnovation #MultidisciplinaryCare #SharedDecisionMaking #Jyokti #PatientEmpowerment Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute 🫀 Baptist Health South Florida 🏥

#HeartValveDisease: Fostering #patient Involvement in Treatment Decisions Tomorrow, Nov 20, at PCR London Valves, there will be a very important session on #shareddecisionmaking organized by the Global Heart Hub that should not be missed! The session, "Navigating the Crossroads of Care: Challenges in Shared Decision-Making for Doctors and Patients," addresses a critical area in our field. In a domain that is continuously evolving with new treatment modalities, we often encounter competing interests, a lack of implementation of multidisciplinary decision-making (#heartteam), lack of implementation of #shareddecisionmaking and a myopic focus on hard clinical process-measured outcomes. In this context, active patient involvement in their treatment trajectory is essential to bring balance. The session will take place tomorrow (Nov 20) from 16:25 – 17:25 in Room 2, The Forum. The panelists include Dr Sandra Lauck, cardiovascular nurse; Sandra McGonigle, patient representative; Dr Peyman Sardari Nia, Cardiothoracic Surgeon; Professor Martine Gilard, Interventional Cardiologist; and Wil Woan, Executive Director of Heart Valve Voice UK. I extend my sincere thanks to the Global Heart Hub for the privilege of being involved in this journey of empowering patients! #SharedDecisionMaking. #HeartSDM #HeartValveDisease
