We are honoured to have been featured on Mark Masai's video interview with Natasha Kimani. This conversation was sparked by a recent interview she had on her #TalkToMeDirect podcast with Polly Wachira of Maono Space around chagemakers and the impact they have in communities. Natasha in her words clearly brought out how most people assume that communities in rural areas don't know what they want. However, spaces like Maono Space empower and amplify the agency needed for people in those communities to take action and change their own lives. 📹 ✨ Watch her interview with Polly here: https://lnkd.in/dwwMCXtd #Changemakers

While national-level #data offers valuable insight on trends and conditions across the country, it often lacks the fine detail necessary to understand the unique challenges faced by local communities at the local level. Take healthcare access, for example. At the national level, the data may show an overall improvement in coverage or declining mortality rates. However, this broader view can mask significant #Inequalities, such as the differences in access to #healthcare facilities or the quality of services between urban and rural areas, or among various socio-economic groups within the same region. The result? Critical local issues remain hidden in the big picture. 🔴To explore this further, check out Al Kags' insights here: https://lnkd.in/ezzkKukK #Chagemakers #AshokaFelow

For years, #data collection has been shaped by government agendas, often missing out on the specific needs and challenges faced by local #communities. Al Kags, our Executive Director, is changing this narrative. His vision is to put citizens at the forefront of development, enabling them to gather data that reflects their realities and helps inform better decision-making. Through his work at the The Open Institute, Al has pioneered tools like Sabasi, a free data collection platform that allows communities to design their own questionnaires, collect relevant information, and use that data to address local issues. His innovative approach has gained significant recognition, with Kenya now acknowledging citizen-generated data as official statistics. Al’s efforts go beyond Kenya, as he seeks to expand this model across Africa, advocating for data governance frameworks that prioritize transparency, open data, and active citizen participation. As a 2024 #AshokaFellow, we can’t wait to see how this journey unfolds and the continued positive change he will bring to the society. #DataForChange #OpenData
