☀ 🌎 How does geomagnetic storms effect #transformers? ☀ 🌎 “During #geomagnetic disturbances, a quasi-DC electric field tends to be generated on the earth surface, which leads to negative impacts on transformers. The quasi-DC induced current can be generated between the neutral points of two connected transformers, which is called Geomagnetically Induced Current (GIC). The GIC can harm to the power system including the transformers. During the events, transformers could consume a great deal of reactive power. In addition, high-level harmonics can be produced due to the saturation of the core, which have potential to lead to unnecessary tripping in the power systems.
