FOOD 4 THOUGHT The entertainment industry notoriously has been about "who you know" but in the past 15 or so years it's paving the way for cutting out the "middle-men" and self producing/releasing. Have you heard the latest?:   Taylor Swift and her team chose to finance and distribute The Eras Tour concert film independently, bypassing traditional Hollywood studios, which allowed them to increase potential earnings and be the sole beneficiaries of the film's profits.   The movie will be shown in over 1,000 theaters across the US, with AMC receiving 43% of box office revenue and Swift keeping the remaining 57%. Interesting acquisition on this… I say interesting not because I disapprove, but actually because I would have guessed that The Walt Disney Company, Netflix or Amazon Prime didn’t make a play for it. I figured that the main streamers would love to acquire a theater chain to expand their reach. A theater chain would have given them the ability to showcase their content exclusively, create promotional experiences, etc. Plus, I would have been excited to see what innovative offerings they may have brought to the theater experience. Since the pandemic, theaters are in a free fall and need to find a way to rethink customer experience. But, most of them are so buried by debt that they can’t make those type of pivots. Nonetheless, curious to see what Sony does with the acquisition. What are your thoughts?

Advertising helps theatres by providing a revenue and also can use proper distribution to target the audience from the theatres, maybe this can be a thing and actually work for both the parties. Also, how about we simply have the proper aspect screen ratio for all ads in the theatres? It really will look nicer, these details will go a long way. I love going to the movies. I remember every film I watched as a child in the theatre. It was one activity the entire family could do together and looked forward to it. I was the nerd who dressed up in Gryffindor robes to watch the final Harry Potter movie with my fellow Potterheads [remember Manasvini Vaidyula and Keerthana Pachalla?] and never missed volunteering for the Toronto International Film Festival. The excitement of choosing the perfect film, the smell of popcorn in the air, and the thrill of experiencing stories unfold on the big screen was what childhood was all about! As the landscape of theatres and multiplexes in India evolves, it's so sad to read that theatres are grappling with reduced screenings and underperforming films (Read more: https://lnkd.in/eTh5jkz3). On the other hand, OTT platforms are also hesitating to acquire movies, fearing box office failures. Where did it go all wrong? This is because of an increasing disconnect between audience preferences and the content being produced on the big screen. Whereas, OTT platforms provide viewers with more entertainment options beyond traditional cinema. Amazing talent is also being discovered on OTT platforms, artists who would otherwise never have made it (due to favouritism rather than merit being the selection criteria in the traditional movie industry.) I'm not an expert on movies, but as a content creator and marketer, here are some strategies I thought of: 1) Curate Diverse Content: Offer a mix of mainstream and niche films to cater to various audience preferences. 2) Enhance Viewing Experience: Invest in comfortable seating, advanced audiovisual technology, and amenities like food and beverage options - at reasonable rates - to provide a premium experience. 3) Offer Attractive Pricing: Implement competitive ticket pricing, discounts, and bundled offers to attract more patrons. 4) Collaborate with OTT Platforms: Partner with streaming services for simultaneous releases or exclusive content deals to leverage theatrical and digital audiences. 5) Promote Special Events: Organize special screenings, Q&A sessions with filmmakers, or themed movie nights to create buzz and attract audiences. As someone deeply passionate about the power of cinema, I hope theatres embrace change and reconnect with audiences in meaningful ways. At a time when the box office is starved for content and audiences seem pickier than ever, Fathom Events is posting record revenue gains. For 20 years, the joint venture between AMC, Regal and Cinemark has been best known for bringing alternative content to the big screen in the form of classic Hollywood titles, live telecasts of theater and opera productions, concerts and even television series. In 2023, Fathom generated $100 million at the box office, a 116% increase over 2019 levels and its highest-grossing year ever. And that momentum has continued into 2024, as the company tallied $43 million in the first quarter, up nearly 140% compared to the $18 million it tallied in the year-earlier period. Again, smart move by AMC and Taylor. We’re likely to see more of this in the future, where theatres will become more and more used for exhibitions of concerts, and other types of events, instead of solely being reserved for traditional film screenings or film festivals. Media and entertainment is rapidly changing. And with emergening generations so are people’s preferences when it comes to what type of content they want to spend money on, on “whom” they want to spend it on, and how, and where, they prefer to consume it. Basically, 1 important question for exhibitors to ask is: What’s in it for the consumer / attendee? In other words, what is / are some unique incentivize(s) to make them want to leave the comforts of their homes, and spend that $30 bill? In the case of Taylor, it’s the power of her brand, and the experience of her record-smashing Eras tour that many didn’t get to see. There will also likely be even more than just the documentary offered when the fans get to the theatres - there will probably also be limited edition merch and / or other forms of marketing revenue. While AMC and Taylor are certainly leveraging on an incredible fanbase; for any fan, there are incentives to be gained for them here as well. It’s the perfect “win-win” scenario for all parties involved, which is any exhibitor’s dream.
