As we enter the final week of June, consider the importance of celebrating diverse communities at work all year—and making space for every type of person 💚
That means making space to celebrate moments like #Pride, Indigenous rights, diverse abilities, and the multitude of ethnicities, races, and gender expressions. To offer some inspiration, we asked Good On You’s Chief People Officer 🦩 Claudia Barriga-Larriviere to share some advice 🌈
“A lot of people who really believe they are truly coming from a very benevolent place believe that politics and allyship belong outside of the workplace,” Claudia says. “‘We want to just work,’ which is very cute because not everybody gets to ‘just work’.”
“Things like Pride are very targeted in terms of the time of year and how long it happens: we can shine spotlights on specific things that need change, that need attention, effort, love, resources, and thought. All of this is so that, in a year’s time, we know Pride is coming—and that change sticks.”
“So why then do businesses need to take a stance? Not only are your people the people you should care about—whose livelihood you’re responsible for—they’re more than one thing. So are the communities and the people you serve, like your customers, your providers, and your suppliers. If those people or anyone inside your purse of employees, the people most proximate to you, are struggling with being accepted for their identity, not feeling secure in their job because of who they are, then they don’t get to ‘just work.’”
“Until everybody gets to ‘just work’, we can’t take our foot up the pedal,” Claudia says.
