When you meet one of your heroes and you swap storm stories and you lead with your management fails, move to how you volunteered during Florence at the Friday Center under her leadership, mention how you really appreciated her leadership and finish with "you are everything I want to be and more." And she replies, "You were a start-up, I inherited the American Red Cross." My most prized possession. I was expecting a signature not a note. Be mindful she carried on a full conversation while signing and never missed a beat. Her leadership tips. 1. Hire slowly. The pain of a vacancy is easier to deal with than the pain of a bad hire. 2. Hire diversity; people who think differently. My heroes do not play sports. They save lives and empower others to do the same!
