📣 'The Death Penalty: A Colonial Relic?'- 28 Sep 2023 📣 The first free lecture in Professor Leslie Thomas KC's new Gresham College series explores the death penalty's roots, its abolition in England & Wales, and its continuation in the Commonwealth Caribbean. Analysing the Privy Council's role in perpetuating this practice, this punishment is examined closely. Is it a colonial relic which reinforces societal injustices? Is it time for its complete abolition? In his new lecture series, 'Hard Choices: The Law's Struggle with Ethical Dilemmas', Professor Thomas KC will take on hard-hitting, controversial questions which strike at the heart of the relationship between law, justice and society. Owner of NBR.co.nz, The National Business Review in New Zealand & NewMediaSolution.us & NewMediaSolution.co.nz a global, out of the box SAS media platform.
For many years, The NBR List carried a negative label: RICH. Amid the pandemic in 2020, the decision was made to skip the List, as the audience was uninterested in hearing from affluent individuals unless they offered valuable advice. However, in 2021, The NBR List was relaunched. It now showcases inspirational insights and philanthropic innovation, resonating with a broader audience. Despite the positive reception, not all individuals wish to be featured. This year, we faced another legal challenge from someone unhappy with their own success. Nevertheless, those who embrace our mission generously share their time and stories, shedding light on both challenging and rewarding experiences. Join us on Monday, June 10th to celebrate the unsung heroes featured in The NBR List. Let their stories of resilience and bravery inspire you. NBR - National Business Review.

"Oftentimes, we do incremental things that actually disrupt our ability to be able to get to justice. And we say, well, since justice is so far out, or justice isn’t possible, then it doesn’t matter, we just need to take this win in the near term. And that can’t happen anymore. We have to be able to orient our day-to-day work, even if it’s small, on a path to justice, and make those hard choices in this near term that sometimes we have to make in order to adhere to that principle of justice and not take the easy win. Or, if we do take the easy win, acknowledge what we’ve done, because now we’ve created another thing that has to be undone." About the author Peggy Bailey Peggy Bailey is vice president for housing and income security at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities based in Washington, DC. https://lnkd.in/egfPrTZY

There are more than a few reasons why life here in Los Angeles is grand but one of them is the inspiration I get from the small but mighty non-profits that continue to make our city better. One is Public Matters, founded by Mike Blockstein and Reanne Estrada. If you want a break from the news cycle, have a look at this article titled "Conspiratorial Joy Lives Here."
