Pictured here is a vintage safety sign from the C&O Railroad that is proudly displayed at The Market, a local eatery in Hinton, WV. The town of which once was a major hub for the rail industry in the US. The statement shown here is very powerful. The person who can do the most for your personal safety is the one looking at you in the mirror. This sign got me thinking though…..do we truly empower our workers enough for this to be true? Knowing you should stop in certain situations and feeling empowered to are different. Barriers to safety such as customer deadlines, production goals, and a rush to get equipment back up and running can all force employees to make sacrifices in their personal safety. I would challenge all organizations and safety practitioners this National Safety Month to take a hard look in our own proverbial mirror, and ask ourselves if we are truly empowering our employees to own their personal safety. Until we become okay with removing the barriers and management system gaps that drive our employees behaviors, they will continue to take risks, and not be their own biggest safety advocates. Celebrate when employees correct safety issues or exercise a Stop Work Authority, and reward those types of behaviors. Empower your people to own their personal safety! #NationalSafetyMonth #EHSProfessionals
