Erik Brisson, Project Manager on the 495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project in #Virginia, shares a peek into the details of this transformative project. In one of the most congested regions of the U.S., the 495 NEXT is a game-changer for easing traffic and improving safety. As traffic volumes rise along the I-495 corridor, the need to address current and future travel demands has never been more urgent.

It's approaching 10 years since changes to the Ontario, Canada - Highway Traffic Act (HTA) were made and OTM Book 15 - Pedestrian Crossing Treatments was published - allowing municipalities to use for traffic control – a non-signalized pedestrian crossing, consisting of static signs and pavement markings, where drivers must yield the right of way to a pedestrian standing at the curb waiting to cross.
A panel discussion featuring the City of MississaugaCity of Vaughan and City of Ottawa at the Ontario Traffic Council - Active Transportation Symposium on March 7, 2024 will provide an opportunity to review and discuss the municipal experience in Ontario implementing Pedestrian Crossovers (PXO) including considerations regarding OTM Book 15 Pedestrian Crossing Treatments. Community engagement around big infrastructure projects 🚀
Although these projects are often sanctioned by national governments that override local objections, their local impacts are huge and need to be addressed, communicated and mitigated.
🚄Euston Overstation: This major project is a "once in a generation opportunity to transform Euston into much more than a station." With the community's help, it is our ambition to create a thriving neighbourhood that welcomes everyone.

🌊Ports of Jersey Harbour Masterplan: The plans will ensure the port’s long-term viability, improve customer experience, create new commercial opportunities, and realise the area’s potential as a leisure, cultural and tourism destination. The Commonplace was created to share key news updates so locals were informed every step of the way.

🚗 Highways England: Highways England used Commonplace to engage people around new motorway projects all across the country - projects that needed periodic road closures and local diversions so work could be done. In order to help people avoid the headache of discovering a road closure on the way to work or suddenly finding motorway traffic diverted to their local roads, they sent regular emails to all their news subscribers.

💨Hornsea 4 feedback: The latest proposals for Hornsea Four offshore wind farm can all be located here! Not only were all updates easily accessible but local people could even vote on the colours and finishes of the Hornsea Four onshore substation.

Did you know? Adelaide is the country’s only mainland capital city without a non-stop motorway in its metropolitan area.
As a result, Adelaide’s transport network is struggling to meet demand and the crash rate along the T2D section of South Road is 11 times higher than the Northern Expressway, and seven times higher than the Southern Expressway.
By easing congestion and reducing stop-start traffic, the T2D Project will improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
Up to 200 fewer crashes are expected each year on the T2D Project section of South Road.
Jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments, the T2D Project will shape the future for South Australia: https://lnkd.in/gRsamJJe#road#infrastructure#construction#traveltime
🚉 My think tank "NorthOnTrack" has produced a diagram showcasing a short-medium term solution to creating a more reliable and well-connected network through Manchester.
🚪 ➡ 🚪 The plan takes into consideration good end-to-end journey times to the airport and stratifies most east-west intercity services through Victoria, ensuring transfers are as frequent and few as possible while better utilising the Ordsall chord.
By reducing conflicting movements and allowing smoother operation, we believe this solution is a superior compromise to the "Option B " implemented over a year ago.
🤝 However, further operational analysis working with local authorities and Network Rail would be required to test its effectiveness both operationally and politically.
This would be intended as a stop-gap measure whilst long-term plans (likely involving tunnelling) are developed to meet the conditional output of concentrating intercity services on Piccadilly, and freeing up capacity for local services on the existing network.
Check out the diagram and let us know your thoughts!

As Chair of #NCTD, I’m excited to share that the North County Transit District has been awarded a $10.2 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (aka: RAISE) program.
This dedicated funding will be used to obtain environmental clearance and complete preliminary engineering for the east segment of the SPRINTER Corridor Service Improvement Project. The Project will construct 9.5 miles of double track along NCTD’s SPRINTER hybrid rail corridor which connects the cities of Escondido and San Marcos.
This is a major milestone in the District’s effort to improve SPRINTER service frequency from 30-minutes to 15-minutes. Once completed, this project will add to the convenience of taking transit in North County by improving access to major regional employment centers, educational institutions, health care providers and other essential destinations. Improved service frequency encourages more people to get out of their cars and on to transit which will in turn improve air quality and reduce congestion on adjacent roadways. It’s a win-win.
In addition to supporting #Sprinter hybrid passenger rail service, the SPRINTER Corridor also supports BNSF freight services. Double tracking will enable freight services to increase frequencies, enhancing the movement of goods and supporting an efficient supply chain in southern California.
This grant from the U.S. DOT builds upon funding the District has already received from Congressman Mike Levin and the FTA to modernize SPRINTER signal infrastructure. This combination of signal modernization and double tracking, will enhance public transit in North San Diego County, strengthen our region’s transportation infrastructure and economy and improve our air quality. Quite a package!

Mike Day Even though we are behind the US and other countries, Australia has a number of advantages in developing high speed rail that could overcome this yawning gap.
For example, the Australian government has created a High Speed Rail Authority to coordinate HSR investigations and construction among the states. Yes, it could be like herding cats, but that risk is moderated by the fact that the likely first stage would be located in one state.
Australians also see passenger rail service as a much needed and legitimate public investment, even as we suffer with third world passenger services between capital cities. Anyone who has taken the 6 hour / 250km train trip from Sydney to Canberra at the leisurely average pace of 45 km/hr knows my pain.
Finally, as Professor Philip Liard of Wollongong University points out, Australia leads the world in high speed rail studies, so we already know something about how HSR COULD work here.
OK, maybe that last point isn't such a good reason. But that's why Mike has joined me and other HSR disciples to form the Australian High Speed Rail Association. To pinch a famous Aussie phrase, its to "keep the bastards honest".
