The Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River in the United States has helped restore fish populations, particularly salmon and steelhead. These fish ladders allow fish to bypass the dam and continue their migration upstream to spawn. Similar projects have been implemented at various hydropower dams worldwide to mitigate the impacts of dam construction on fish populations. Additionally, some hydropower projects have adopted innovative turbine designs and flow management strategies to minimize harm to fish populations. These projects aim to maintain or restore fish habitat and migration routes, contributing to overall fish population restoration efforts while still generating clean energy. #funfact #funfactfriday #hydropower #fishpopulation #renewableenergy #renewableresources #sustainability #finulent #finulentsolutions

Ardnacrusha Hydroelectric Station on the Lower River Shannon; turn back your clocks to the 1930s! It is difficult to understand that ESB still manages this scheme in exactly the same way as it did 90 years ago. The excessive water abstraction affects over 15km of the Natura 2000 designated river, and there is still no mitigation to keep migrating fish away from the turbines. The Habitats Directive, Eel Regulation, and Water Framework Directive have all come into force. However, despite being in the middle of a biodiversity crisis, nothing ever changes at this unsustainable hydroelectric scheme.

There is probably still space for some dams (small-scale, properly and strategically planned, especially for water supply), but the time of large dams has gone. A recent study has shown that they will already be uneconomical (even without considering environmental and social cost) by 2030. The future is on dam removal, and the future has to come soon, especially for ageing infrastructure. "(...) in returning rivers to free-flowing conditions, it reunites rivers with their floodplains, restores riparian habitat, improves water quality, and re-enables circulation of migrating fish. Removal also reduces #greenhouse gas emissions. The idea that dams are “clean” is a widespread misconception, still endlessly promoted by international dam builders and sometimes cited erroneously even by environmentalists". #dams #hydropower #renewables https://lnkd.in/dQhk6YSM

As of this writing, the 74-cubic-kilometer reservoir for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) continues to fill, a process that will last into the second half of this decade. Perhaps Africa’s highest-profile hydropower project ever, GERD will produce more than 6 gigawatts of electricity when it’s all done. Inadequate winter precipitation creates substantial challenges to our nation's ecosystem, affecting not only agriculture sector but also posing hurdles for hydropower generation, especially in run-of-river projects. The reduced rainfall further impedes the snowmelt' s natural healing process at the mountains. As the significant stakeholders, its crucial for bankers and hydropower entrepreneurs to carefully assess these impacts and implement necessary precautions while developing and funding projects to mitigate potential risks. #EnvironmentalChallenges #HydropowerIssues #ClimateAwareness
