It is fantastic to see explicit teaching put firmly on the Victorian Department of Education agenda, including a new phonics reading program for early primary school-aged students from 2025. Diverse Thinkers tutoring sessions have led to successful outcomes for a wide variety of students using this model of teaching. Explicit teaching provides a wonderful structure for lessons and enables students to be given clear guidance, feedback and opportunities for real growth. We’ve found it to be incredibly empowering for students to know how best to learn and rise to the occasion. #ExplicitInstruction #ExplicitTeaching #Learning #Tutoring #School #Teaching #EnglishTeaching #Schooling #Victoria #VictorianGovernment #Education #English #Literacy #Phonics #VicPol #Literacy #LiteracyStrategies #LiteracySkills Ben Carroll Jacinta Allan

DAY 8 Our only school visit in Helsinki turned into a marvellous opportunity to spend time within six different classrooms. The comprehensive school teaches from Foundation to Year 9 and we had a full run of visiting any of the school classes during the day. On the surface, pedagogical differences between Finnish and Australian classrooms are minimal. We observed science, art, language and home economics lessons and whether the students were doing practical or written work activities, teacher actions and student responses were comparable to counterpart lessons in Australian schools. What differed included manageable class sizes of about 15 and very high degrees of cooperation, attention focus and application from students. It seems that something more than classroom pedagogy is driving the high level of outcomes generated by Finnish education. My belief is that a great quality of student-teacher relationships, with all its complex components, enhances the value and effect even of standard pedagogical practices. Perhaps students are readier participants in teacher relationship-building if they believe education is about them and in their interests, a point made repeatedly by many educators who we talked to during the last two weeks. All classes contained sizeable proportions of non-Finnish background students, something like 40 different first languages could be found among the school cohort of 700 students. The highest behavioural issue at the school, we were informed by our hosts, related to mobile device possession. Disruptive behaviours and associated management challenges were not high on the list of concerns. This is a major departure point in comparison with many Australian schools. Consistent with all our other school visits, we noted a prevailing atmosphere of calmness and order in all of the spaces that we visited, including corridors, eating and play areas.
