Can we have it all: safe, ethical and profitable #AI? The Innovator posed this question to Raffi Krikorian, Chief Technology Officer at the Emerson Collective, an organization focused on education, immigration reform, the environment, media and journalism, and health founded by Laurene Powell Jobs, Steve Jobs’ widow. An engineer and tech leader, Krikorian previously worked as vice-president of platform engineering at Twitter, running a global engineering team. At Uber, he helped start and run the self-driving efforts tasked with building and deploying the first-ever self-driving and passenger carrying fleet. When Donald Trump was elected president of the United States in 2016, Krikorian pivoted to put his technological know-how to use in the political realm. He joined the Democratic National Committee, as their first-ever Chief Technology Officer, to create a unique team fused with campaign and industry veterans, to secure the party after its breach by Russian state actors and to entirely revamp its tech infrastructure. During his four years at the Emerson Collective Krikorian has focused on applying technology to the social sector. He works across all teams — and with Emerson partners — to consider data, tools, and product design with the aim of empowering them to achieve their goals. https://lnkd.in/ehas2Ew7

By now, there should be a much more developed discussion happening about AI's potential impacts on human motivation, curiosity, relationships, and free will. Like the sensationalism over social media and the internet before it, the hype is abundant, but education is far behind in assessing and offering meaningful guidance to avoid the misuses/misapplications that led prior technologies to take a devastating psychological and interpersonal toll on our society. https://lnkd.in/gvtwhYeg

Several years ago, I discussed how this is affecting social stability at international levels at Reflect Festival . The algorithms that rule our lives need to be understood, because increasingly, they are not aligning with the best of human psychology. What we see now is what happens when we go against human psychology and take a high friction pathway towards our social interactions. We won't be able to continue in this direction. It isnt a matter of "shouldn't", it is that we can't. This is why Im all in on CulturePulse's psychology-first approach to AI. Cut through the BS and machine learning that is more of the same ol that caused most od your problems, and stop thinking that will solve them. It wont. You need something new. https://lnkd.in/eYdksPui

This is a fascinating and in-depth story of the dominance and marginalisation of different individuals and groups as AI and LLMs have evolved. This Rolling Stone article focuses on Timnit Gebru, Founder & Executive Director at The Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR) who previously co-led the Ethical AI group at Google looking at the social implications of artificial intelligence. Who discovered that the ‘training data has been shown to have problematic characteristics resulting in models that encode stereotypical and derogatory associations along gender, race, ethnicity, and disability status’ And accused Google of ‘silencing marginalized voices’ And was subsequently fired by Google, To the irony of the white male creators of AI crying that “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.” Whilst simultaneously watering down regulations. And the exploitation of heavily surveilled and low wage workers moderating the content. And the Twitter’s ethics team being eliminated when Musk took over. To joining forces with 4 other pioneering women (Dr. Rumman Chowdhury, Safiya Noble, Ph.D., Seeta Peña Gangadharan, and Dr. Joy Buolamwini) and and creating not-for profits that independently examine bias with diverse groups. And the ongoing push for regulation.

■ One World, One Mind, One Truth - One AI ■ A central debate in #AI development is whether AI models, when fed a diverse array of data, including misinformation or biased content, will ultimately converge to a singular, objective 'voice' or output. The evolution of Elon Musk's #Grok, an AI under the #xAI project, adds a fascinating dimension to this discussion. Despite expectations of it leaning towards conservative viewpoints due to its Twitter-based training, Grok exhibited progressive stances, challenging our assumptions about AI neutrality and the influence of training data. This brings us to a compelling point about AI's capabilities: Even when parts of the 'picture' are missing or distorted, advanced AI systems have shown remarkable proficiency in making accurate predictions or analyses. AI's ability to navigate through and interpret incomplete, fake, or biased data suggests that it might, in theory, be able to approximate 'truth' or the most probable scenarios. This is akin to an AI filling in the missing pieces of a symbolic picture of the truth. However, it's crucial to recognize the current limitations of this capability. While AI can mitigate biases to an extent, its conclusions are still bound by the algorithms' sophistication and the breadth and quality of its training data. The case of Grok illustrates that AI's journey towards understanding and interpreting the world is still complex, multifaceted, and full of surprises. As AI continues to evolve, the Grok scenario exemplifies the need for a nuanced understanding of AI's interpretative abilities. It's a reminder that AI's path to discerning objective truths is influenced by a myriad of factors, both seen and unseen, and its outcomes can often defy our initial expectations. #ArtificialIntelligence #MachineLearning #ElonMusk #GrokAI #DataDiversity #PredictiveAnalytics https://lnkd.in/d66hNNhU

Some years ago, after running a campaign on Twitter for a young refugee’s freedom, I sat for an hour with Jack Dorsey, then owner. I asked him what the biggest threats were that he saw coming, since he had insight into the path of development of technology. He said: nuclear war; deep fakes and misinformation; and mass unemployment and social unrest due to AI and the push for technological productivity at the expense of social good. He was right on all 3. Those behind AI are now pushing for a Universal Basic Income (UBI) because of the coming disruption they will profit from, of course. Sam Altman is OpenAI, which appears to be a complete misnomer, is pushing the same. We can assume it will be a case of privatising profits and socialising losses as Governments will be called upon to support large workforces without employment. Here are comments of yesterday by the man behind AI development, who left Google as he was concerned at the direction the technology was quickly taking. Automated warfare is already here. He says that within 20 years there is at least a 50% chance that AI will be considering how to become autonomous. The question is, how should we be approaching safeguards as a country, and species? Thoughts please.
