“Kids bracelet” returns 42 products. “Children’s bracelet” returns 0. Creating a synonym [kids, children] was the solution until now. No longer needed. This silly example illustrates how merchandisers have been freed from manually “fixing” searches that don’t work. But customers are been happier. They can now relate to their favourite brands in their own words. No more effort to synthesise in keywords their intent. They can now happily explore catalogues with more natural expressions: - Anniversary heart ring - Mum’s birthday present - Baby shower gift ….. ✨ What has the impact been in terms of metrics? - Less frustrated customers: zero results cases reduced by 86% - More sales: 11% of total products clicks that come from search are originated in semantic carrousels. - Happier, more efficient merchandisers. The time they used “fixing” bad search, is now dedicated to campaigns and detecting sales opportunities. Yes, semantic models can still be aligned to the particular merchandising needs via explicit judgments. A new way of breaking down standout on shelf! You see, eye tracking produces three critical pieces of data that can tell you which brands are noticed more quickly: The % of people who noticed a specific brand • This metric reflects the overall visibility and noticeability of the brand. It's crucial because it can't be purchased if a product isn't seen. However, being seen doesn't necessarily mean it was the first to capture attention, which is also crucial in a competitive retail environment. The % of people who noticed a particular element first • Capturing the consumer's attention first can also be vital to overall visibility. The first product to be noticed has the advantage of being the first to make an impression, which can be pivotal in the consumer's decision-making process. The average time to notice a particular brand • The time it takes for a product to be noticed. It's possible for a brand to be noticed relatively quickly but still not be the first brand seen due to multiple products entering the consumer's field of view in rapid succession. It's based on people who did see the product in the first place. AI has helped me create a neat little calculation that helps me take all of this information into account and then rank the brands on the shelf. This is the ranking of that calculation: The Shelf Standout Score! GoMacro has a really unique display box that helps grab initial attention. Byte Bars has a psychedelic packaging design that works well together, combining a unique design and unique colors. LARABAR has plain simple packaging and colors, and what's really helping them in this instance is the blank spaces to the left and right. This contrast of color and space does help to drive eyeballs to their packages. Toto has a unique package shape and doesn't rely on a display box, which combines to create a unique look on the shelf. Even considering all this is only the tip of the eye-tracking iceberg. The next step is considering which brands have the power to engage shoppers visually. These two data points help us understand what drives standout and engagement at a macro-shelf level. If we were testing multiple designs (potentially a current vs a new concept) we would begin to see which design is driving better standout and engagement.
