Reach or throw, don’t go! This will help your little one remember what to do if someone else is in trouble in the water. If a lifeguard or capable adult is not there to help, do NOT jump in to rescue someone. Instead: Reach out to them. Throw something that floats, like a buoy. You’re never too young to learn water safety. You can teach your child essential lessons like this one from anywhere with our free Longfellow’s WHALE Tales Water Safety for Children program. May is National Water Safety Month, and the YMCA of Middle Tennessee is sharing tips on how we can all stay safe in and around the water. Tip # 6: Don’t jump in the water to save a friend who is struggling in deep water. If an adult or child finds their friend in deep water unexpectedly, their natural reaction may be to jump in the water to try and save them. Even if they are a great swimmer, a panicked person will overpower them, pulling the rescuer under water. The Y’s Safety Around Water program teaches the “reach, throw, don’t go” concept of using a long object to reach for them, and pull them to safety. By using this technique, an adult or child can help their friend without compromising their own safety. #WaterSafetyMonth

Children drown quietly. Check for hazards before playing in the backyard this summer. ✅ Empty water containers after rain ✅ Empty paddling pools and turn over or store on side after every use ✅ Shut pool doors and gates – install a self-closing latch ✅ Ensure your pool or spa complies with Council fencing regulations Always supervise your children actively around water - constant visual contact and within arm’s reach.
