This week’s #ESGC2023 conference provided an excellent opportunity to explore the current regulatory and policy frameworks, the future storage market, and the latest developments in energy storage technologies. It was a pleasure to exchange with policy makers, business, research community and other present stakeholders. 🎙Anne-Katherina Weidenbach, Member of the Cabinet of the Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson, opened the ESGC with a keynote speech, stressing that “energy storage and flexibility services have moved from the background of the energy sector to the forefront.” 📈We applaud the European Commission's recent adoption of a new renewable energy plan which calls for clean energy to meet up to 45% of energy demand across the EU by 2030. Let’s not forget that those ambitious goals can only be successful if governments support the development of long duration energy storage. 📣Vanadium plays a crucial role in long-duration energy storage, particularly in the context of vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). VRFBs are a type of energy storage technology designed for large-scale, grid-level applications but also remote off-grid locations. Vanadium's unique properties make it an ideal choice for these batteries, and it contributes to their effectiveness in long-duration energy storage: 🔹No degradation - The performance of the system remains constant throughout its life with minimal maintenance; 🔹Safety - The working fluid of the battery is water based and as such is totally non flammable; 🔹Sustainability - The vanadium chemistry of the battery is fully reusable and recyclable at the end of project life; 🔹Long life - With annual maintenance of filters and pumps, the system can easily last more than 20 years; 🔹Low energy cost - Over its 20 year lifespan, VRFB technology offers the lowest cost per kWh stored. https://lnkd.in/eAHSphxT #Vanadium #VRFB #energystorage

The use of battery energy storage in power systems is increasing. But while approximately 192GW of solar and 75GW of wind were installed globally in 2022, only 16GW/35GWh (gigawatts per hour) of new storage systems were deployed. To meet our Net Zero ambitions of 2050, annual additions of grid-scale battery energy storage globally must rise to an average of 80 GW annually between now and 2030. Regulations and policies in developing countries do not incentivize the adoption of battery energy storage systems, but a new framework developed by the The World Bank’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) could unlock knowledge and capital.
