Five missile tracking satellites L3Harris Technologies designed and built successfully launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida, as part of the Missile Defense Agency’s (MDA) Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS) program and the Space Development Agency’s (SDA) Tranche 0 (T0) Tracking Layer program. L3Harris’ HBTSS satellite is an on-orbit prototype demonstration that can track maneuvering hypersonic missiles flying beyond the range of today’s ballistic missile detection capabilities. The other four infrared satellites will support SDA’s Tracking Layer, which will demonstrate global indications, warning, tracking and targeting of advanced threats such as hypersonic missiles. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gkgsGceT

Russia's counter to DoD's resilient space? The space race is heating up again, in a dramatic fashion. This week, VCSO Gen Guetlein spoke about how Russia and China are developing CONOPS to take out the DoD's proliferated constellations, which enable space superiority. As constellation numbers increase into the hundreds, conventional means for taking out these satellites are not cost effective. Russia appears to be resorting to a shocking strategy that would include nukes in space. In May of this year, ASECDEF for Space Policy John Plumb testified about this game-changer at a House Armed Services Committee hearing ( DOD Official Confirms Russia Is Developing an 'Indiscriminate' Space Nuke (airandspaceforces.com) ). The exploding of a nuke in space would be indiscriminate in that in addition to military satellites, commercial, civil, and international satellites would be taken out. This destruction would have a global impact on global security as well as global economic prosperity. In the past, almost all nations of the world have adhered to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. One of the key principles of this treaty is that States are not allowed to place nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit or on celestial bodies. It would appear that Russia is going to disregard this treaty and hold the world's space systems at risk. The question for the United States and the world is what should be done to prevent this potential capability from being developed? From reading the articles, it does not appear that diplomacy is working! What do you think? How can the world stop Russia from putting nukes in space? Missile defense begins in space. Recent events demonstrate that defeating low-cost missiles with multimillion-dollar interceptors isn’t sustainable, and only constitutes one piece of the puzzle. Speakers at the National Defense Industrial Association - (NDIA)’s recent Missile Defense Conference recognized the growing need for technology innovation, which includes directed energy, enhanced sensing and integration between land, sea, air and space. https://lnkd.in/ejXz9CPC #space #satellite

The U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA) today announced the award of three prototype agreements to build 54 satellites to establish the Tranche 2 (T2) Tracking Layer, which will proliferate missile warning/missile tracking (MW/MT) infrared sensors as well as fire control-quality infrared sensors for missile defense in support of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA). These Other Transaction Authority (OTA) agreements are awarded to teams led by L3Harris Technologies, Inc. of Melbourne, Florida, Lockheed Martin Corp. of Littleton, Colorado, and Sierra Space of Louisville, Colorado, to each deliver and operate 18 space vehicles as part of the Tranche 2 Tracking Layer constellation, launching no later than April 2027. Each vendor will provide 16 wide field of view missile warning/missile tracking space vehicles with infrared sensors and two space vehicles with missile defense infrared sensors that can generate fire control-quality tracks to provide preliminary missile defense mission capabilities. L3Harris Technologies is being awarded a firm fixed-priced OTA agreement with a total potential value of $919 million. Lockheed Martin Corporation is being awarded a firm fixed-priced OTA agreement with a total potential value of $890 million. Sierra Space is being awarded a firm fixed-priced OTA with a total potential value of $740 million. While the kickoff and early execution of these awards will be accomplished under a continuing resolution, planned execution would be disrupted if a full Defense budget is not passed before the end of March. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gbvR-q93

there is perhaps a necessity for a revision of the 1967 #OuterSpaceTreaty to include specific provisions banning this type of military activities in the outer space and thus avoid its militarization... So far the mentioned treaty includes the following provisions: Article IV - States Parties to the Treaty undertake not to place in orbit around the Earth any objects carrying nuclear weapons or any other kinds of weapons of mass destruction, install such weapons on celestial bodies, or station such weapons in outer space in any other manner. The Moon and other celestial bodies shall be used by all States Parties to the Treaty exclusively for peaceful purposes. The establishment of military bases, installations and fortifications, the testing of any type of weapons and the conduct of military manoeuvres on celestial bodies shall be forbidden ... Article IX - In the exploration and use of outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, States Parties to the Treaty shall be guided by the principle of cooperation and mutual assistance and shall conduct all their activities in outer space...with due regard to the corresponding interests of all other States Parties to the Treaty ... https://lnkd.in/eaFHr8DR
The Pentagon is taking its missile defense capabilities to the next level. According to The New York Times, several hypersonic and ballistic space tracking sensors have been launched to detect potential Russian and Chinese missile attacks on American targets in orbit. The plan is to cover low-Earth orbit with hundreds of similar satellites within five years, with a budget of almost $14 billion. Even if some satellites are disabled, the system will continue to operate, switching to other devices in the orbital web. Testing of the prototype network of two satellites is already underway, with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman producing most of the satellites. Are we getting closer to Star Wars ??? #StarWars #Russia #China #US #NationalDefense #Security #Geopolitics #Risks 📸 Heroic Hollywood

Day 2 : Unique Learning SBIRs Satellite Systems The Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) is a United States Space Force program that provides early missile warning, missile defense, and technical intelligence. SBIRS is a constellation of satellites equipped with infrared sensors that can detect and track missile launches worldwide. The system is designed to enhance national security by providing timely and accurate information about missile threats. Key Components of SBIRS: 1. Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO) Satellites: These satellites are positioned at high altitudes, allowing them to continuously monitor large areas of the Earth. They provide persistent coverage and can detect missile launches and other infrared events. 2. Highly Elliptical Orbit (HEO) Sensors: These sensors are carried on satellites in highly elliptical orbits, providing coverage of the polar regions, which are not covered by GEO satellites. 3. Ground Segment: The ground segment consists of control and data processing facilities that manage the satellites and analyze the data they collect. This includes command and control centers, as well as data relay stations. 4. infrared Sensors: The core technology of SBIRS is its advanced infrared sensors, which can detect the heat signatures of missile launches. These sensors can track the trajectory of missiles and provide critical data for missile defense systems. Functions and Applications: - Missile Warning: SBIRS provides early warning of ballistic missile launches, enabling prompt defensive measures. - Missile Defense: The system supports missile defense operations by providing tracking data that can be used to intercept and neutralize threats. - Battlespace Awareness: SBIRS contributes to situational awareness for military operations, helping to track and analyze various activities. - Technical Intelligence: The system collects data that can be used for intelligence purposes, such as assessing the capabilities of foreign missile systems. SBIRS represents a significant advancement in space-based surveillance and reconnaissance, providing critical information to protect national and global security. #nasa #jpl #lockheedmartin #space #ai
