Esthetics and beautification programs like this help remove blight and restore a hope in urban communities . Generations of familes have invested in their neighborhoods and are now on fixed incomes, can now benefit from those tax dollars. #Preservatingblackcommunities #effectsofurbanrenewal #urbanplanning
The Legacy Housing Rehabilitation Program is designed to honor the seniors in the Northwest neighborhood! Most of the homes have been passed down from generation to generation. When we are done with the work, their property increases in value, thus, contributing to generational wealth! #RestoreHistoricBlackNeighborhoods

I'm such a fan of #communityengagement - such a powerful way to hear from people, explore different ideas and perspectives, and find ways to connect and collaborate. It is an important part of addressing the #polarity we seem to be experiencing across so many different topics. Some of the toughest questions we're experiencing in our communities can be tackled by engaging with people, surfacing ideas and perspectives, and finding common solutions. It is hard to be afraid of or stand in judgement of people when you are sitting across the table from them enjoying an egg-salad sandwich! Before you issue your next RFP for a challenge you're facing in your community, might I suggest you start with a facilitated community conversation to scope out the actual issues? #economicaloption Comment below to tell me about a sticky situation in your community or a helpful community conversation you've been part of. Let's learn from one another using this great example from the City of Lloydminster
Last week we posted congratulations to the City of Lloydminster for hosting a very robust and progressive community conference on housing and homelessness. The conference brought together almost 100 community members, agencies, businesses, and citizens to learn and explore with one another. To share the experience further, the City hired Cody Mazerolle from Maz Entertainment to record the event and support the audio visual needs for the day. The video recording from the day can be found at https://lnkd.in/gqfzXYeE We are sharing it here as the conference included panel sessions with speakers Ryan Veldkamp from the City of Red Deer, Natasha Pidkowa from the City of Lloydminster , Lori Richer from the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness, and Derek Ramage from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Société canadienne d'hypothèques et de logement(SCHL). Their thoughts and perspectives were helpful to conference attendees, and may be informative for you as well. Our President/CEO, Scott Cameron handled the presentation/moderator duties for the day. Reach out if you have any questions or want to do something similar in your community. The value of #communityengagement is significant and we'd welcome the opportunity to help you work through your wicked questions.

Preventing homelessness as CEO of Your Own Place CIC 🏡 with Money, Housing, Tenancy & Cost of Living support. We reach people that many organisations don’t, won’t or can’t - through treating people as equals.
The problem of supply and demand 🏡 💡 Demand for affordable housing massively outstrips supply. If local councils want to manage the overwhelming shortage of housing, then having local residents that understand and feel empowered about their housing options, is a part of the solution. It plays a part in: 🏡 dignity, relationships and respect - knowledge is power 🏡 making sure that only those that should be on the list are on the list 🏡 agency - knowing your options gives you more confidence in knowing what you’re aiming for We make time for these conversations as well as bring our expertise around housing to the conversation. In this visually engaging example with Emmaus UK in Colchester, Emily Newman explored all the different places people have lived before (grey dots), where they’d like to live (red dots) and where people are going to aim for now (green dots). They compared the different pros and cons to decide which to move forward with and what they should do next. Thank you Colchester Borough Homes for supporting this work and seeing its value 🙏 Claire Staddon #housing #homelessness #safeandsecurehome #councils #prevention #dignity #values #skillsforlife

Isaac Yablo is Senior Advisor for Community Safety for the City of Boston. He moves seamlessly across scales, from city-wide strategy to on-scene response. In his work, we watched how well Isaac sees people, where they are coming from, and the structures that surround them: the not visible things that are driving visible behaviors. Isaac has shown us what it can mean to be seen. Read our 2023 Year of Stories here: https://lnkd.in/gGt_nfRn The project: We worked with Isaac in co-designing an updated protocol for the city’s response to incidents of community violence. Preserving Affordable Communities Through Right of First Refusal in Prince George’s County Right of First Refusal policies are used by jurisdictions throughout the country to influence the outcome of property transactions and expand the availability of affordable rental housing. But the success of these policies depends on the details of local program design and implementation. The University of Maryland's APA session traced the history of Prince George's County, Maryland's Right of First Refusal program, and its transformation from a dormant policy to a potent tool for affordable housing preservation. The presenters described how a comprehensive countywide housing planning process and equitable transit-oriented development advocacy along the Purple Line converged to generate collective action to strengthen the program. They talked about the unique roles that the public sector, tenant advocates, mission-minded developers, and other community stakeholders have played to strengthen and implement the policy to preserve affordable housing and prevent displacement of tenants. The panelists provided perspective on the complexities of implementing affordable housing policies like Right of First Refusal, how Right of First Refusal can help prevent displacement and advance racial equity, and the successes possible when the right players come together to drive policy solutions.
