#OneHealth One of the shocking findings I learned while touring the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador was the extent of the oil industry presence. Oil rigs dotted the landscape. Some burning rigs were right near schools and homes. Apparently, oil constitutes 32 percent of the nation's economy. Unlike Brazil where deforestation is largely for intensive agriculture, deforestation in other countries of the Amazon such as Ecuador is for oil production. Climate change from burning fossil fuels will eliminate the glaciers in the Andes that the rainforest depends upon for water. The rainforest is getting hammered by multiple threats. 🌍 Just stumbled upon a mind-blowing fact: the Earth's most significant terrestrial carbon store is hidden in peat organic matter! 😲 Astonishingly, this covers only 3% of the Earth's surface, yet it holds a whopping twice the carbon found in all the world's forests combined! 🌱 In other words: The carbon absorbed by global wetlands annually is equivalent to taking around 330 million cars off the road for an entire year! 🌿 Wrap your head around this: peat develops from slowly decaying plant material in waterlogged areas, leading to its incredible carbon storage ability. 🏔 And guess what? Peat bogs aren't confined to one corner of the world – they exist everywhere, from tropical rainforests to the Arctic! 🌊 Now, here's the kicker: these wetlands are more than just peat bogs.
