Addressing Laboratory Workforce Shortage. "Inclusivity & Diversity" I believe that in order for us to attract and retain our employees, RESPECT is what we also need to observe in the workplace. No matter where the person came from, we should let them feel that they are welcomed, recognized and appreciated. Life is too short to spread hate on your colleague or even to anyone at work. This will never bring positive impact towards patient safety goals. Teach them passionately, embrace and respect each other's culture. Set boundaries on some things but never set them apart from your lab family.

A few years ago, when there wasn’t as much understanding about coproduction in the health and care context, someone said they found it a difficult concept as they could only think about coproducers in the film making context. Now, sometimes I notice ‘co-designed and co-delivered’ written about in the health and care service context where it seems the ‘co’ means when different teams or services have worked together on something. I can’t see that it’s when teams of services have worked together, and together including experts by experience. If those teams already included peer support workers then some lived expertise perspective would come in there - although that is a whole different debate about workforce perspectives in relation to coproduction. But this isn’t mentioned. It’s good that teams, services and organisations are joining up - working collaboratively, innovatively, in partnership. Over the top of all that, lived experience still needs to come in strategically and systematically for solutions that work for anything around access, experience, outcomes measurement and addressing inequalities.

For the first few years in business, I believed that bootstrapping and reinvesting profit was the only way to grow. But you can’t bootstrap your way to millions. I’d never considered accessing capital until a mentor suggested it. Shorter my thereafter, Bhavin Patel, CSCP and Steve Hall planted the seed during a WBENC Conference. Fast forward, my mindset has shifted. Capital provides leverage, and I am forever grateful for the team at Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) for being such trusted partners to support growth for Driven to Succeed, LLC, and to Abbott for co-investing funds to support diverse growing businesses. It was a distinct pleasure to share my story at the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDCHQ) Conference with this esteemed panel, and to encourage others to dream big, take the calculated risk to access capital, and consider a partnership with LISC. (See a picture of the flier in the comments) Capital has given me the opportunity to dream about what’s possible. I have more freedom to stay in my zone of genius because I’ve hired more people, and have stopped wearing so many hats. As a result, the business pipeline has grown, our capacity has increased, we are more efficient, and our infrastructure is even stronger. In recent discussions about safety and societal expectations, a powerful metaphor has surfaced—the choice between a man and a bear, highlighting profound fears around trust and safety. As a man, I've been reflecting on what these discussions signify and how they relate to the fears expressed by women about safety and vulnerability. It's crucial for men like myself to listen, learn, and support the ongoing dialogue about creating safer environments. I believe in amplifying the voices that articulate these fears, as understanding these perspectives is the first step toward change. Women's experiences with fear and vulnerability are not just individual stories; they are reflective of broader societal issues that require collective action and awareness. I am committed to engaging respectfully in these conversations, acknowledging and validating experiences without minimizing them. Additionally, I advocate for policies and community actions that enhance safety and support for everyone, particularly those who feel vulnerable. To my fellow men, I urge us to reflect on our actions and interactions. Let's educate ourselves and others about these issues and strive to be allies who contribute positively to a safer, more inclusive society. We can all play a part in fostering a culture of respect and empathy. Let’s continue this conversation, understand more, and do better. Together, we can make a difference.
