Yes, the major your degree is conferred matters, but... This should not influence hiring protocols or procedures and be the absolute basis for employment exclusion. Employers must maintain a level of professional partiality and open-mindedness when considering the value candidates bring to an open role. There is zero reason to pigeonhole a candidate in to a binary box because they do/don't tick all of the boxes. If they have the soft skills, translational experience, eagerness, and drive to learn, there is no excuse to not consider them. This doesn't mean your next highly successful: Computer Programmer can't have a degree in Geology. Computational Chemist can't have a degree in Agricultural Sciences. Project Manager can't have a degree in Art Therapy. Engineer can't have a degree in Marine Biology. Supply Chain Specialist can't have a degree in Hospitality. Media Relations Expert can't have a degree in Finance. Data Analyst can't have a degree in History. The more narrow employers make their focus on this single parameter, the more discriminatory they begin to publicly present themselves as -- as rigid, uninnovative entities that actively cultivate a culture that stifles diverse, unique perspectives from all over the world. While this is not explicitly illegal under the EEO Act, unconscious bias is a serious problem in the workplace, and awareness to eliminate such biases must be embedded in the company's DNA at every level. The most successful companies in the world aren't successful because every single employee ticks every single box, they are successful because they are open and willing to hear different perspectives that challenge traditional lines of thought in the workplace. #unconsciousbias #jobseeker

If you were a hiring manager would you hire the first person with skills you want? After just a short experience of 1 year of hiring, I would give you a resounding "NO". Although I was not personally impacted, many EXTREMELY talented people from my team and other teams are now looking for work.
