So cool we get to do these things

It was awesome to catch up with athlete and nature-lover Ethan Shawcroft (right) this week and get started on filming for our new resource "Volunteering in Nature: Let's Make it Accessible"! With his farming background and Indigenous heritage, Ethan is a lifelong horticulturalist and revegetation master - in some years planting more than 10,000 trees on volunteer projects! He is also passionate about reconnecting people to nature and ensuring equal access to nature opportunities. Ethan says it is not an easy process for him to find either paid or volunteer work in the environment. Prospective employers see his chair and don't give him the chance to prove himself. Instead, he builds his own outlets, and helps others find their outlets too - including setting up a friend's horticultural business, which he now works in. The key barriers Ethan and our other lived-experience consultants come up against in the nature-volunteering world are people's attitudes and misconceptions around disability and a lack of understanding about how to create a more inclusive space for volunteering. We're working on addressing those obstacles, but in the meantime, we wanted to share this important point from Ethan: "You don't need to have a disability to talk to people with a disability. Having open and respectful conversations with empathy is key to figuring out how to work together." Want to get involved in this project? Tanderra is Project Youths longer term housing properties where young people aged 16-24 can reside in their property for up to 5 years whole they are working or studying. The median rent in Sutherland Shire area for a 1-bedroom apartment in $530 (extracted from realestate.com), this is an increase of 7.1% over the past 12months. Most young people use DCJ subsidy programs(such as Rent Choice Youth) as an exit point however, are limited to only applying for properties up to $350. Tanderra has been a proactive response in supporting young people with long-term housing while needing to stay in Sutherland Shire. I am grateful for CCIVS, FYEG, and the Racial Justice Taskforce and all the organisations involved for this amazing opportunity to be able to be a speaker at Decolonise IVS networking event. The event was about decolonisation, volunteering, 'development' work and youth exchange programs. CCIVS has spent nearly three years on this research project, with the goal of being more aware of how organisations are affected by colonisation and finding a way to change that. One of the many take aways and reminders; • Understanding that the current system creates a power imbalance even if we think there isn't one or that we are doing 'good'. • Different cultures have their own system that may not be 'volunteering' as we know it in west but are there to uplift communities when there is a need. • Lastly, and this is my contribution, for the decolonisation process to truly begin we need to understand the systems we are in, and then be able dismantle and to uproot them. #activism #decolonisation #change #research #conversation #volunteering
