Having a quality Private Label is absolutely paramount -- Shoppers have become more and more savvy and see less of a trade-off than before. Even off-brands on e-commerce are having their day in the sun as "good enough" is now good enough. There are ways that established brands can defend against PL and off-brands (and it's been fun to build playbooks for clients that illustrate how), but once the dam breaks its a virtuous cycle for these more economical challengers, going from trial to repeat (or promotion/reviews for more durable goods to lend credibility and drive momentum).

You are WRONG! It’s not a Dairy Milk Ad! It’s an Amul Milk Chocolate Ad. The power of marketing and brand building is as simple as this ad, and countless such examples across the globe. Cadbury built the entire Dairy Milk brand on this shade of color - Purple/Violet (I won’t get into that detail). And just so, one of the Biggest Chocolate Brands in the World & one of the Biggest Dairy Brand in the World - have an identical looking product. With identical name - Silk & Velvett. Amul is simply looking to draft in Dairy Milk’s Silk successes, without much noise and with fairly simple strategy to become a substitute and be a no-brainer alternative to Cadbury. Even though Cadbury is the original and creator .. several Amul-like sheep follow in! Moral of the story: “Build a product/brand that people remember, even when they buy another.” Kudos Cadbury, Boo boo Amul!

Store Brands Take Over: Private Label Sales Soar in 2024! Private label brands are on a roll! According to exclusive data from Circana for the PLMA, private label sales are hitting record highs: - Market Share Up: Unit share reached 22.9% and dollar share hit 20.4% in the first half of 2024. - Outperforming Nationals: Private label sales increased 2.3% vs. 1.1% for national brands. Unit sales were even stronger, with private labels up 2.5% and nationals down 0.8%. - "Store Brands Phenomenon" Sweeps Retail: PLMA President Peggy Davies highlights the industry-wide trend. - Beauty Leads the Charge: The beauty department saw the highest private label growth at 10%, followed by liquor ( 8.8%) and general food ( 6.9%).
