Before Commissioner meetings begin on Wednesday to start rolling out a list of policy options, check out the full statement below from Abby at Everyone Home DC suggesting Commissioners consider ways to tax the rich to help those who have historically been left behind. "We encourage the TRC to look at ways to thoughtfully increase taxes for our highest net-worth neighbors to generate revenue and invest in people for whom there is never enough. This means asking households, businesses, and developers to pay their fair share rather than asking our neighbors who are living outside, in our shelters, or who are precariously doubled up to continue to bear the burden of this problem that we, as a society, have been unwilling to solve. For those of you concerned about safety in your neighborhoods, the state of Georgia has given taxpayers the opportunity to directly contribute to their safety and have a little control in where the tax dollars go. Effective for 2023, Georgia taxpayers can apply and elect to make a contribution to a Qualified Law Enforcement Foundation and receive a dollar-for-dollar credit on your state taxes, subject to limits. So for example, if you are going to have to pay $1,000 in state taxes, you can elect to make a $1,000 contribution to your local police foundation, make the payment, and you will receive a $1,000 credit towards your state tax liability. You are going to pay the state tax anyway, so why not make a payment that contributes directly to your community?
