Tax-exempt charities in the US are forbidden from supporting political parties or candidates because of a 1954 law called the “Johnson Amendment.” It’s been a frequent point of controversy over the years because it’s a government-imposed limit on free speech. Defenders of the law have argued that tax-exemption is voluntary, and if charities want to engage in politics then they can just give up tax exemption. (That is the scene where Charity, the muggle studies professor, is being fed to Nagini for her public opinions that wizards should marry muggles to avoid extinction.) The purity fixation of Death-eaters would regard Charity's proposal as miscegenation, and assign Charity the status of "blood traitor". Now JK provides another opportunity to explain honour-based violence in her recent incarnation as Death-eater, espousing anti-trans purity narratives. For JK to use her vast platform to now take the opposite role is disappointing but illustrative. (1) Escalating violence; (2) By a group; (3) Against a dissenter/defector; (4) Enforcing group ideology; (5) In defence of group socio-economic structure. This is what honour-based violence looks like in western societies. Change the conversation.
Rejection of trust's registration application u/s 12AB due to limiting benefits to "SUNNI MUSLIMS". Tribunal orders reconsideration.: The Appellate Tribunal reviewed the rejection of registration u/s 12AB due to alleged violation of section 13(1)(b) as trust's objects were not solely for "SUNNI MUSLIMS." Tribunal found the trust to be religious cum charitable, with objects not limited to a specific religious community. The CIT(E) denied registration based on this restriction, invoking section 13(1)(b) and disallowing exemption u/s 11. Tribunal directed CIT(E) to reassess the registration application and grant it in accordance with the law. While speaking exclusively to Lawstreet Journal over the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Electoral Bonds case, Senior Advocate and President of the Supreme Court Bar Association Dr. Adish C Aggarwala said that revealing the names of corporate donors and the amount of donations would render the corporates vulnerable for victimisation. The possibility of them being singled out by those parties, that had received less or no contribution from them, and further harassment, cannot be ruled out if the names of corporate donors and their quantum of donation to various parties are revealed, Aggarwala added.
