selective justice at play : This is often witnessed in our society when individuals from certain social or economic backgrounds receive preferential treatment in the legal system compared to others. This has manifested in cases where influential or wealthy individuals are given lenient sentences or escape punishment altogether, while those from marginalized communities face harsher penalties for similar offenses (scapegoatism). It's important to strive for a justice system that treats everyone equally and without bias. Selective justice undermines trust and fairness in the legal system.

Follow-through and implementation can be some of the hardest parts of policymaking. But without careful attention to both, what you see in the legislative text is... not always what you get. My Brennan Center for Justice colleague Stephanie Wylie and I explore that and other problems as they relate to bail reform in a new report. Please read and share! https://lnkd.in/e35_4ASb

For fellow lawyers, fellow leftists and progressives, and organizers/activists - I wrote a book! "CIRCU$ COURT$: How Racism and Greed Poisoned the American Legal System, and What You Can Do About It" is available for preorder now and is out in paperback and hardcover January 1! Have you ever wondered why there are so many weird rules in American courts? Why 42 states charge for the public defender? Why in multiple states, you can't countersue your landlord in eviction cases? I wrote this book to answer these and other questions people have about the legal system. They're all variations on a single common theme - "How can they do that?" And whether "they" refers to judges, prosecutors, landlords, or lawyers, after decades of copaganda shows like Law and Order, the American people do not know how their legal system works. That's bad! There are only two areas of American society you MUST interact with: healthcare and the courts. At some point in your life, you WILL be involved with the legal system somehow, be it a lawsuit or a parking ticket. But no one is ever prepared - and the worst part is, that's by design. So I wrote this book to make sure that everyone knows how to prepare themselves for that inevitable encounter with the legal system, what to expect, and how we as a society can fix it.
