Reflecting on my first week with the new team 🤔
Week 1 in a new role can be overwhelming, even after 13 years at the same company. It’s a whirlwind of information, meetings, slides, and new faces, all while absorbing priorities for the new fiscal year.
We have to hit the ground running, but instead of diving in and assigning work, I pushed myself to be more patient, focused on these two things instead:
Just Listen. 👂
Making a conscious effort to simply listen during meetings and calls. No jumping to conclusions, no dishing out work, no pushing new ideas or cascading meeting invites. Just listening and asking questions. Being curious and understanding the team’s dynamics, their existing great ideas, and interactions is invaluable. This approach helps me internalize and appreciate the wealth of knowledge around me, setting the foundation for future success.
Get Personal. 🤝
Dedicating an hour to sharing who I am with the team—both at work and in my personal life. It was important for me to be authentic and transparent, to build trust from the get-go. The team was noticeably surprised by how much I shared, but it’s crucial they know the person behind the resume.
The following day, I spent 30 minutes 1:1 with each team member, focusing solely on getting to know them. No business talk, just personal stories. Those 30 minutes flew by, leaving everyone energized and connected.
This week, we’ll shift gears a bit, but last week was about building real connections first. I’m already thrilled about what we’ll achieve together this year—not just for our customers but also as a beacon of collaboration inside and outside of Microsoft. 🌟
