Do you Do what you Say🙄? Ipsos Denmark hosted an interesting ESG event today. A few new insights I took with me: • The “Say-Do gap” is real. People and companies do differently than what they say. Humans are lazy. If we live in a tall building our likeliness to recycle goes down significantly. Novo Nordisk briefly mentioned their recycling program for injectors but highlighted the challenge of motivating people to actually walk to the pharmacy for recycling. • People overestimate low-impact changes and underestimate high impact changes🙋🏼♀️. Surprisingly, only a fraction (9-15%) of supposed recyclables in Denmark and the UK actually get recycled♻️. Therefore recycling ranks relatively low on the impact scale. Partly because we are poor at recycling correctly (but please don’t stop, teach your neighbour on how to do it right instead!). •Digitalization has a BIG impact on CO2 emissions. CO2 footprint currently = global air traffic and soon equal to global car traffic🛩️🚗! I know we are building lots of “mega-datacenters” in the Nordics because of green energy but hey.. this does not sound sustainable.. What if we start small but meaningful (see below)? Seems like it could be more impactful to ditch the car and add a few more vegan meals into our lives vs choosing the smallest packaging. Also.. • 🚶🏼♀️Shall we not try to actually walk the “extra mile” to recycle & do it correctly? Beneficial for health and the planet. • 💻Drop the phone/computer from time to time. Meet IRL instead of via the very energy-intensive mega-data centers sometime? • ⚡Corporates: Apart from all the "traditional" ESG work, do not forget to review the digitalization strategy and footprint. Work closely with your agency to reduce data consumption! It's remarkable to reflect on the two-year journey of Wura and the profound impact it has had on promoting sustainability and bringing smiles to people’s faces. Wura is a free item sharing mobile application created with the sole purpose of promoting a sharing economy. Our platform has been at the forefront of revolutionizing how Africa consumes and share household items, utilizing scalable technology solutions to reach a wider audience and make a lasting impact. It is inspiring to see the tangible impact we have had on promoting sustainability. Through the simple act of sharing and reusing items, our users have made significant contributions: - Together, we've prevented the release of 4,910kg of CO2 equivalents into the atmosphere (it would take approximately 230 trees a year to absorb the equivalent amount of CO2 emissions). This cumulative greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) saved represents our collective efforts in reducing GHG and a shared commitment to SDG 13 on Climate Action. - Our platform's efforts to conserve water resources, saving 831.39 cubic meters, align with SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. - By community members passing on belongings they no longer need to someone who values it, we are promoting a circular economy. 40% of the items shared on Wura consist of clothing, while the remaining categories include Food, Electronics, Furniture, and Books. - With more than 4,000 users actively sharing items on Wura, our top sharers are from Lagos, Edo, and Abuja. Our mobile platform has attracted users that spans across other countries particularly in Kenya, India, US, and the UK, as we have built systems for expansion through our Geocentric feature of items availability. - Beyond statistics, we've remained committed to fostering a thriving community through initiatives like our monthly newsletter (Wura Insights). Through inspiring stories and eco-updates, we keep our users engaged and informed, empowering them to be change-makers. We are excited to announce our participation in the Google for Startups Cloud Program, receiving seed capital in the form of cloud credits. This support will accelerate our use of AI to enhance our carbon tracker algorithm. Additionally, we've joined the She Sustains Accelerator with Clean Tech Hub Nigeria, supported by the 2X Global, to further develop our project to address the urgent challenges of the climate crisis. Sustainability is the practice of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. I learned about this when I was in STPM. Let's talk about sustainability! To me, as an individual; sustainability means a lifestyle where we live without further damaging our mother nature. It’s important that we practise it, especially in this era where earth is facing a faster climate change. I find it very concerning that some companies and individuals don't seem to care about the effect that they have done to our planet even after knowing the state it is in right now. There are many simple ways to have a sustainable lifestyle. For example, I personally have been avoiding using plastic bags when going shopping. I usually put the items in my tote bag or recycle bags. Other than that, I also reduce the amount of my daily food waste. The reason is, these waste emit methane which is a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. To avoid food waste, I always make sure to finish my meals and whenever I don’t finish it, I will keep it and eat it later. In a nutshell, it’s vital to have a sustainable lifestyle, not only for the earth's well being, but also for the future generations. We should also throw the mindset that one person is not enough to make a change for the planet. Truth is, a significant impact could be reached if everyone commits this together.
