The CV is dead; long live the portfolio! Events industry is a creative industry where amazing experiences are built from scratch. As an events manager you will be sourcing amazing venues, negotiating with various suppliers, creating event design and bringing in various experiences to make it an experience to remember. Now, show me how you can demonstrate that on a CV. I’ll wait. 😴😴😴 I’m 99% sure that if a candidate with a CV and a candidate with a strong portfolio is presented to a hiring manager and only one gets an interview, it will be the person with a portfolio. I know I definitely got most of my freelance interviews thanks to my portfolio. Want to build yours? Here’s my little checklist: 👉 Keep it short and succinct - nobody will want to read your life story so don’t treat it like a motivational letter 👉 Show visuals - pictures from events that show the scope, the detail, the effort that had to go into putting it on 👉 Data is king: what was it? where? how many people? what budget did you manage? what savings have you made for your client? 👉 Include client testimonials 👉 Be SUPER careful about including information on events that are under NDA - you are contractually obligated to not disclose any information that can identify the event or the client so make sure your portfolio doesn’t land you in hot water; if possible, use event examples that aren’t NDA’ed If I’m looking to hire a photographer or a band, I want to see examples of their work - I think same goes for those who want to hire event managers as we're only as good as our events are! I was chatting to my sister the other day about the kind of things I do when I'm organising an event... Depending on the event I'm working on (and what day of the week it is!), I could be... 🔸 Sourcing accommodation for 500 people and coordinating transfers for them all 🔸 Creating project plans to cover multi-day events 🔸 Working with clients to create their agenda and content 🔸 Coordinating suppliers, staff, freelancers 🔸 Managing big, complicated budgets 🔸 Coming up with ideas for engaging activities for guests 🔸 Helping a colleague 🔸 Making sure the client is happy ...the list goes on... Afterwards, she just said 'I have no idea how you do it, I just wouldn't know where to start...' And that's the thing about working in events... It's not rocket science - but it does take a certain type of person to be able to wear many hats and deal with whatever is thrown at them. (For context, I couldn't do what my sister does - she has her own, successful beauty salon, which completely suits her personality and skills) I love working in events. I love the variety, and even if the task appears the same, the fact that you are doing it for a different client makes it different.
