There are no easy answers in this domain and we all (funders, funds, and grantees) need to get comfortable with the discomfort of not always being able to measure things as cleanly as we would like. At Liberation Ventures, we're co-creating a 10-year grantmaking strategy with movement leaders and weighing different ways to measure impact over that time. “I wasted so much time pitching angel groups - so I wish I knew this sooner.” I really appreciate Amanda Schnetzer’s transparency in her fundraising process. As a mom to a son with ADHD, she took matters into her own hands to build support & resources for families with young kids. A big lesson she learned while raising is that angels, VCs & angel groups - are not the same. 👉 Nor does the term “early stage” mean the same to them. Investors usually have a “thesis”, meaning they focus on a particular: ✅ industry ✅ stage of founder (from pre-rev to particular growth metrics) ✅ initiatives such as sustainability ✅ region or geography ✅ background - such as a serial entrepreneur or successfully exited founder ✅ even gender or race for supporting historically underrepresented & undercapitalized groups It’s easy to get caught up in pitching someone or a particular group if they have the title of “investor.” BUT most investors publicly share their thesis on their profiles and/or website. 🙌 Before spending time on mass outreach and trying to get a ton of calls, be sure to ask if they even invest at the particular stage and/or industry etc. before bothering to book a call. It sounds simple, but we see founders waste HOURS talking to the wrong investors.😅
