A really important podcast episode as we here at the Institute for Indo-Pacific Affairs unpack the 2024 State of Southeast Asia Survey. As a scholar with deep interests (and some would argue, roots) in the region, I have been a keen follower of the work that ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute (ISEAS) does annually in producing this report. The rich data from the survey gives us a good barometer of how the region sees the challenges and opportunities that await it, and more importantly, how relevant its Dialogue Partners are. For us here in Aotearoa New Zealand, it should serve as a sharp wake up call that this vibrant region sees as as the least important partner. Furthermore, there is much we can learn from Southeast Asia in terms of their pragmatic outlook towards international relations.

Breaking news: The European Commission and the Government of Singapore launched exploratory discussions in view of #Singapore’s possible association to #HorizonEurope, the EU's key funding programme for research and innovation with a budget of €95.5 billion. Association to the EU’s Framework Programme for Research and Innovation is the closest form of international cooperation in science and technology between the European Union and a non-EU country. In the #FDI stat report for the end of 2021, 1% goes to Africa. German companies may not see #Africa as an area of opportunity due to challenges brought up by some investors like market size, skilled labor, infrastructure, and political instability in some countries. According to Ms.Tanja Gönner & and Andreas Spieß, it is a must to go. However, the business model needs to be reviewed by partners like #BMZ #BDI #GIZ to get the view of politicians and private sectors to discuss reducing these risks for businesses. In my view point, I believe they need to have strong partnerships with African companies too.
