If you are the technical co-founder of a tiny, early-stage startup, you need to dive into the code. Coding is not "below you". This is a very difficult role but necessary for the early stages. Eventually, as you scale your team, you will spend less time coding, but when you are small (~4 engineers), you need to be in the weeds yourself. If you are vetting early-stage startups as a founding engineer, keep this in mind as well. Ask the CTO how he or she will be contributing to the product development. #cto #cofounder #earlystagestartups #technicalleadership #softwareengineer

One of my favorite jobs was my first gig as Director of Engineering for a startup. One day a bunch of us - senior sysadmin, junior developers, the guy answering support phone calls, our marketing lead - were having lunch. Two hours later a whole new product design had been wireframed on a whiteboard and - long story short - that product helped take the company public. Nobody remembers or cares who came up with what piece of that design. The moral? Good ideas can come from anywhere, and they should always win. https://ow.ly/Q1Vr50Rgmvs #fractionalcto #cto #startup #startupsuccess #startupfounder

When you start your software engineering career, join a startup. You will learn way more in a short period while getting exposure to the business side of the company. Even if the startup does not work out and the stock becomes worthless, your knowledge will give you more rewarding opportunities afterward. #techstartup #careergrowth #softwareengineering #selfgrowth

Day 7 of 10 learnings from a milestone in tech. Find your niche. Try a startup. Try a large company. They are very different, and being comfortable in one or another does not necessarily benefit you. I found, in my switch from large tech companies to a private tech company, that it protected my role and income during the 2008-2010 crisis. By doing that, I found that I really liked cutting edge tech and modern development processes, which led me to startups (Rally and GitLab) which I’ve truly loved and benefitted from. Don’t let your corporate benefits or comfort lock you in or put you at the mercy of a siloed role/technology/company. Enjoy the ride and the variety tech can provide. A word of warning here though - if you want the wisdom in tech I talked about on Day 1 (July 17th), time in seat matters. Hopping companies annually very rarely sets you up for long term success - actual accomplishments and SME-level experiences matter. #tech #techcommunity #software #techdevelopment

finding great tech builders is tough. there are sooo many for software. if you're bootstrapped or funded, fractional can be great option. this post not sponsored... i'm not looking but i'm always assessing ppl. Kwame Ampem is unique: - was key engineer at Numero, YC-backed. - fin-tech, health-tech, social tech. - hands on code. - 10 years of that at companies. - based in US. - and... like other VC-backed founding teams i meet, he's good on... - focus, saying no. - core features. - core tech. - growth tactics. ...likes soccer n that movie, Sing. --> if u know a startup that needs to focus and go 0 to 1 with a tech lead who has gone thru the fundraise juggle, then Kwame. #startups #yc #software #engineering
