Wellness Wednesday: My Sistas: it is OK to Say No "The idea of overcoming is always fascinating to me. It's fascinating because few of us realize how much energy we have expended just to be here today. I don't think we give ourselves enough credit for the overcoming" Maya Angelou It's no secret that Black Women are often expected to do more, offer more, and sacrifice more at no benefit to themselves. We see this in the way of mothers who are expected to be the backbone of the family, and their daughters are expected to follow their foot steps. We see this when bosses casually increase our workloads without increasing our pay in the same casual manner. Historically, society has been silent about the struggles experienced uniquely by Black Women because we are black and women and that places us in two marginalized groups. From our families and peers to our work environment, Black Women are expected to put all self-care and mental wellbeing on the "back burner" to tend to our responsibilities because we're apparently so much stronger than everyone else!!🥺 "Setting boundaries is a method of informing those around you how to treat you, how to care for you, how to interact with you in a way that is nurturing, fulfilling, and makes you feel safe. It isn’t about forming a tight fence around your inner being. It is about ensuring you feel free enough to be yourself, in totality, with those you bond with, and interactions are healthy, reciprocal, and beneficial. And also that your values are acknowledged, honored and respected." Nneka M. Okona Remember that boundaries both protect you from harm and give you the freedom to exist as your full self so when setting boundaries regarding things like your time and your peace remember what happens without that time to yourself or without the presence of peace. Investing in your Health and being committed to attending your Preventive Care is essential. Our Black Women are dying or living with poor qualities of life. My Sistas it is OK to Say No and say Yes to yourself. BW4HL is committed to advocating, educating, encouraging, supporting and empowering Black Women to address their health and well-being. Please join us on July 20th; to learn about what it means to live Healthy. #BW4HL #blackwomenshealth #livinghealthy

This was such a phenomenal session with some fabulous female entrepreneurs last week! I am so happy to be having open conversations around mental health. Dr Cheng shared some of the best advice I have heard when someone you know seems upset. Start with asking do they need to be hugged, to be heard or to be helped. Sometimes we jump too quickly to try to help when that is not what is needed. Also took the time to do some holiday shopping at the female run small businesses at the Run The World Summit market in Square One! #PurolatorHealth #femaleentrepreneurs #femaleleadership
We recently hosted a fireside chat at the Run The World Summit Female Founded Holiday Market at Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga, Ont. Speaking with some of the women entrepreneurs, Stacey Cummings, our Marketing Director, and Dr. Amy Cheng, Physician, Medical Director Program at Cleveland Clinic Canada, discussed ways to take care of one’s mental wellness during the holiday season. While the holidays bring joy for many, they can also be a time of stress and anxiety. Dr. Cheng recommended tips to relieve some of the pressures during this time of year, including: ◾ Setting more boundaries by saying “no” when you have too much on your plate, ◾ Using breathing techniques, ◾ Taking a moment to step away if tensions are high, and ◾ Being more compassionate to ourselves and others. #RTWHolidayMarket #SmallBusiness #WomenOwnedBusiness #ClevelandClinicCanada #MentalHealthMatters www.runtheworldsummit.com
