"The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively." – Bob Marley As we wrap up the 9th annual Insurance Careers Month, I am reflecting on building a career of purpose, something that leaves us individually fulfilled and adding value to others. I recently saw the new One Love movie on Bob Marley’s life and was struck by how his short life of 36 years seemed to fill a very specific purpose. He had the foresight and fortitude to bring together warring factions within Jamaica, and kept going even after he, his wife and colleague were shot. It was remarkable they all survived and knew their purpose was worth the personal risk. It was inspiring he found a way to reach people with whom he disagreed, who were violent when he promoted peace. As we all navigate a troubled and divisive world, maybe Bob Marley’s life can serve as an example that there is always common ground to find. Business leaders know how to incorporate differing views, negotiate, and compromise. We are focused on creating value and real outcomes. It’s our job to win. We can choose to see a bigger purpose and bring connection and progress to our own communities and workplace.
