🚧 Transportation Funding in Pennsylvania: A Call to Action 🚧 The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has played a vital role in financing public transportation and infrastructure, contributing $8 billion to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) since 2008. However, this commitment has resulted in a staggering debt of nearly $16 billion, leading to yearly toll increases. As public transit systems continue to grapple with financial challenges exacerbated by the pandemic, the need for a stable funding source has never been more urgent. 🚦 Incredible News for the City of Carson! 🚦 The City has been awarded $967,840 from the U.S. Department of Transportation Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant! This funding will be used to update Carson’s comprehensive safety action plan and support crucial supplemental planning and demonstration activities. The supplemental efforts will bring Carson’s Local Roadway Safety Plan (LRSP) into compliance with USDOT Action Plan requirements and initiate programs such as the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Pilot Program and Neighborhood Traffic Management Pilot Program. When people ask me about upcoming major infrastructure projects and improvements, I always let them know that the inconvenience of roadway construction is well worth the improvements when everything is completed.

$2.1B investment in Columbia, SC’s malfunction junction. It needs it. The South Carolina Dept. of Transportation is untangling a congested, complicated knot of an interstate corridor, aiming to change the so-called “malfunction junction” into the safe, modern and smooth-traveling Carolina Crossroads. The ambitious, $2.1-billion project is the largest the state has ever undertaken—as it overhauls the corridor of Interstates 20, 26 and 126 in Columbia in a redesign to prioritize safety and traffic flow on the most congested portion of highway in South Carolina’s Midlands region.

🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 🛣️ SS4A Grants: Making Our Roads Safer for Everyone Did you know that the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program is on a mission to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries? Here’s the scoop: What is SS4A? SS4A is a discretionary grant program established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). Over the next five years (2022-2026), it will provide a whopping $5 billion in grants to support regional, local, and Tribal initiatives aimed at improving road safety. 🌐 The goal? Zero roadway deaths. Yes, you read that right! The SS4A program follows a Safe System Approach, focusing on all users—pedestrians, bicyclists, public transportation riders, motorists, and more. 🚶♀️🚴♂️🚌🚗 What Can SS4A Grants Be Used For? Planning: Communities can develop comprehensive safety action plans that identify the most significant roadway safety concerns. Demonstration: Implement projects and strategies to address those safety issues. Implementation: Put those plans into action! 🚀 FY24 Funding Opportunities: Planning and Demonstration Grants: Apply until August 29, 2024. Get those creative safety ideas flowing! Implementation Grants: The application period for these closed in May, but stay tuned for future rounds. 💡 Recent Awards: In May 2024, USDOT announced nearly $64 million in awards for 99 communities under the FY24 SS4A Planning and Demonstration Grants.
