Terrorism is the mechanism used to ensure that the “…the superior position…” Abraham Lincoln articulated during the 1858 Lincoln/Douglas debates, remains with the white man. The time highlighted in the statement “… from George Stinney, Jr. to George Floyd, Jr.…” is incredibly misleading. I have notice that a lot of things relative to the history of (b)Black people in America centers around the WWII era. George Sinney, Jr., was executed at the age of 14 on June 16, 1944, however the “extralegal” murder of (b)Black men is an understood practice as common in America is #capitalism and predates the Declaration of Independence. There's no way to pick one such atrocity as the “worst tragedy” in America because there are so many. It is the fact that there are so many that makes it horrible. White people who consider themselves, racial justice “allies” read about these stories and recoil in third party horror. These are memories, lived experiences and motivations of every (b)Black person in America. We're either cowed by these stories to conform or radicalized by these stories to “buck the system” however it is the existence of the “system” which we’re still arguing about in 2024. I read an article in the Nonprofit Quarterly, “Unpacking the False Allyship of White Racial Justice Leaders” which introduced me to the term #performativeallyship. Having a name for the aggravating habit white people have of aligning their lived experience with #DEI and learning about #blackHistory in America was refreshing. All of these efforts to #understand black angst lead to no real change, most just want credit for saying “I understand” as if (b)Black people need white permission to be pissed off, fed up and over it [ALL]. The article is a good read and starts off with language that immediately causes discomfort and the reality is of the social conditions in America don't make you uncomfortable then you're not doing it right. Diversity Equity and Inclusion Initiatives maintain the idea of othering (b)Black people in #whiteled spaces. It's the #whiteled that maintains white supremacy . Is the problem. What needs to be changed. From the article: “To rectify hundreds of years of advantage, true equality could mean sacrifice on white people’s part in several key areas. Economically—with regard to who holds and manages wealth and resources Socially—the shifting of power dynamics in social and professional spaces Psychologically—erasing the norm that white people’s comfort is paramount In spite of the strides that have been made in the civil rights movement, white supremacy is still prevalent in these three categories.” https://lnkd.in/g8Nmfjnc

George Junius Stinney Jr. (October 21, 1929 – June 16, 1944) was a boy who, at the age of 14, was wrongfully convicted and then executed in a proceeding. As an unfair trial for the murders of two young white girls in March 1944 in his hometown of Alcolu, South Carolina. He was convicted, sentenced to death, and executed by electric chair in June 1944, thus becoming the youngest American confirmed to be both sentenced to death and executed in the 20th century. From George Junius Stinney to George Floyd! We talk about racial equality because it’s a matter of life or death! When oh when will this sickness be addressed?

Far-right Christian nationalists are a threat to the Jewish community and other minorities in the US. Their "Project 2025" would institutionalise discrimination of other faiths and cultures and turn the US into a teocracy, much like what we see in many muslim countries where religious rules govern legislation and policies. White Christian supremacy would become the new normal and everything else more or less illegal. It would mean the end of democracy in the US. Christian nationalists are gaining momentum in the Republican party and may well turn Trump into their megaphone. "Project 2025 goes deep into how a Trump administration would further erase separations between church and state on many issues that are crucial to American-Jewish voters. These include policy initiatives like reversing LGBTQ rights, banning abortion, restricting contraception, planned mass deportations and entry bans, as well as shifting resources from public schools to private schools. In addition, it would fire 50,000 civil servants by reclassifying their jobs as "political appointments," replacing them with officials ideologically aligned with the plan. Jewish organizations specifically focused on the aforementioned issues have already expressed public alarm over what would happen should these plans be put into motion. Antisemitism as a cudgel Perhaps most concerning for the American-Jewish community is Project 2025's plan to defund the U.S. Department of Education. The Office of Civil Rights, which is responsible for investigating and adjudicating allegations of antisemitism, sits within this department and has opened at least 145 investigations into such complaints. The word "antisemitism" isn't used once throughout the 900-page document."

this by Jennifer Pahlka, if you are grappling with how to secure medium-term, systems-shifting outcomes (sustainability, innovation in government ) is wonderful. She describes (e.g.,) how public-sector recruitment has become: "...a prescribed set of procedures that are meant to appear objective but have become intricate, convoluted and at times nonsensical....only candidates with inside knowledge...can successfully navigate this highly specialized system." It's dead on, not just because it's an accurate critique, but because it captures the positive intent behind these efforts, and the reality of complex systems/wicked problems - where it's very hard to overcome the stabilizing effect of the system because there are many, non-malign, feedback loops that constrain what mechanistic interventions can accomplish. Anne White, Jason Pearman and I were talking yesterday about linking foresight-informed objectives (not this-years tomatoes, but a home-grown mix of vegetables in a garden) to the short-term (till the soil today, so that you can start to learn what grows where) - but also about why you need to push on the smaller problems to learn about how those stabilizer effects work, so that you can learn how to achieve the bigger goals. In public sector innovation, you can't wish away the systems. You have to operate them - because that's what exists - but without clarity on that objective (home-grown vegetables) you lose sight of the fact that you are experimenting and innovating (tilling, this years crop) mostly to learn - not to find the....Death Star tomato. Great stuff. Thanks Jennifer Pahlka (and always, Giulio Quaggiotto for keeping us informed!) #innovation #systemschange #publicsectorinnovation #

Last year, when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Alice Walker’s words, "Resistance is the secret of joy," bolstered protesters’ spirits and resolve. Exactly one year later, met with the country’s descent into unthinkable terrain, there are no words for the daily, unrelenting attacks on fundamental decency; the callous disregard for “othered” people’s lives. So, what do you do when you think there’s nothing better you can do? And, what does this mean, practically speaking, especially for African Americans who’ve led the way on human rights since our forced arrival here in 1619? It means that the negative impact of racism on people of color will be ignored and the positive benefits for Whites will be preserved. It means that credentialed people will not be in positions of authority (in business, education, housing, law, medicine, politics; in every field of endeavor) to counteract centuries’ old racist myths, lies, and habits that persist devoid of the devastating repercussions of “greatness.” It means that precedents are being set upon which still more draconian measures can be staged. And, it means, as has historically been the case, a critical mass will be reached over which bullies will exert sufficient power to force “good people” to stop fighting the “inevitable.” #ResistanceIsJoy #UnrelentingAttacks #FundamentalDecency #OtheredLivesMatter #NoWordsForThis #PositiveBenefitsPreserved #RacismImpactIgnored #CounteractRacistMyths #CriticalMassResistance #FightingTheInevitable #DefendHumanRights #AfricanAmericanStruggle #DraconianMeasures #StandAgainstBullies #InjusticePrevails #NeverGiveUpHope #UnityAgainstInequality #ChangeThroughAction #PersistForJustice #VoicesForEquality #Racism #Race #WhiteSupremacy

We need a translation of Heritage Foundation's 922-page Project 2025 blueprint for a Trump dictatorship in a readable and viewable format. It's a detailed how-to plan about turning the U.S. into a fascist society. Few will read the entire document so we need a distillation of its bottom line goals (e.g., abolishing Social Security, 23% cut immediately; repeal of the Civil Rights Act; national ban on abortion; ban on teaching mention of slavery or Black American history). I remember we did something at NRDC in the 90s when we flipped the switch on House GOP's "Contract with America" to "Contract on America", and translated right-wing rhetoric into real world consequences. We can do the same now.

Attention, Transatlanticists 🇩🇪🇪🇺🇺🇸 - the DAJV event calendar is set to kick off with an unparalleled highlight! We are delighted to extend an invitation to an exclusive book presentation co-hosted by the Deutsch-Amerikanische Juristen-Vereinigung (DAJV e.V.) - German-American Lawyers' Association and the AmerikaHaus NRW e.V.: 📘 How to Interpret the Constitution 🎙️ Professor Cass R. Sunstein, Harvard Law School 📅 Wednesday, January 17, 2024 🕡 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. 📍 Via Zoom In his latest book, "How to Interpret the Constitution," our esteemed guest speaker, Professor Cass R. Sunstein, offers a captivating exploration of contrasting approaches to interpreting the American Constitution. Set against the backdrop of recent landmark decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court, addressing pivotal questions in U.S. society — including voting rights, affirmative action, abortion rights, gun laws, and more — Professor Sunstein delves into the various constitutional interpretations. "How to Interpret the Constitution" argues that the choice of interpretive approach should hinge on whether it enhances or diminishes the well-being of American citizens. This perspective underscores the significance of assessing the broad effects of these interpretations on our rights, institutions, and the very foundations of democracy. 🌐 Please register via Zoom https://lnkd.in/esC2jJPw We look forward to your virtual presence on January 17, as we engage in a thought-provoking discussion with Professor Cass R.
