A very interesting article in Nature Biotechnology that shows a promising alternative for treating auditory loss and must be shared!   While AAV-mediated delivery remains the gold standard for gene therapies to treat hereditary hearing loss, non-viral vectors may help to overcome gene size limitations, among other challenges. I got to talk and think about cell and gene therapy development all day yesterday. Terrific Summit yesterday hosted by Charles River Laboratories. There are worse locations to hold a meeting. Great view, great discussions, and what an incredible visual at the end! Perfect encapsulation of the day. Some of the themes we discussed included: Cell therapy - Automation, scalability, and reproducibility of manufacturing; also, how significant of an issue are secondary T cell malignancies and what is the link to the use of lentivirus in production? Dr. Peter Marks of FDA says data still out and still investigating the link to the CAR insertion AAV gene therapy junction - How does this life-saving class of therapies breakthrough the present cross roads? Need work on novel capsids to lower immunogenicity, and, as Richard Wilson put it, a successful product launch wouldn't hurt either. Biotech and tools investing - optimism in the market for returned deal volume but investors are a bit more selective. Looking for capital efficiency and thoughtful development plans. Tools a potentially great place to focus with the entire industry needing better tools but have to be cognizant of typical exit valuations.
