Embracing the Winds of Change for a Sustainable Future! 🌍 I am excited to see the recent announcement from the European Union regarding the significant plans being made in the advancement of wind energy. The EU's commitment to focus on the development of wind power support the important role that renewable energy plays in shaping a cleaner and more sustainable global energy landscape. The Commission communication confirms the need to accelerate investment in offshore wind, as well as ocean energies. New offshore installations must increase to almost 12 GW per year on average to reach EU countries’ commitments. That is 10 times more than the 1.2 GW which was installed in 2022. The communication identifies 6 areas where progress would help speeding up the roll out of offshore capacity: - strengthening grid infrastructure and regional cooperation - accelerating permitting - ensuring integrated maritime spatial planning - strengthening resilience of infrastructure - sustaining research and innovation to supporting offshore renewable energy - developing supply chains and skills These steps signals a promising future for the renewable energy sector. However, while this news is a big step in the right direction, it also serves as a reminder that NOW is the time for policymakers to turn these promises into tangible actions. The success of these initiatives relies on the collaborative efforts of industry leaders, policymakers, and communities to drive effective policy implementation and ensure the successful realization of our shared sustainability goals. Let's seize this opportunity to further advocate for the growth of renewable energy and emphasize the importance of effective policy implementation in enabling a smooth and successful transition to a more sustainable energy ecosystem. The European Commission, Australia, the US, and Canada have launched the ‘Supercharging Battery Storage Initiative’ to promote battery storage in the global transition to low emissions electricity. This initiative recognizes the crucial role of energy storage in integrating renewable energy and improving grid stability worldwide. It aims to foster international cooperation, align goals, and boost the deployment and development of energy storage technology. The initiative will focus on reducing the costs of energy storage tech and building a sustainable, transparent, diversified, and responsible supply chain. The European Commission and Australia are leading the initiative, with the US and Canada also participating. High-profile supporters include US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and EC Vice President Maroš Šefčovič, who have both emphasized the essential role of battery storage in the green transition. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global battery storage deployments need to exceed 1TW by 2030 to align with net zero policy pledges. This represents a 23x increase from today’s levels! The energy transformation in Victoria includes a range of Victorian government First Nations initiatives. That includes retrofits for Aboriginal housing, programs to support Traditional Owners implement their own renewable energy projects, requirements for engagement with Traditional Owners as part of the Victorian Renewable Energy and Storage Targets (VRET), and the Victorian Transmission Investment Framework (VTIF) from 2024. In addition to providing a summary of statutory land recovery and Traditional Ownership recognition in Victoria, a new report published by the Network briefly reviews the current energy mix including key renewable energy policies, clean energy targets, and strategies the State is relying on to transition to 95% renewable energy by 2035. The report has been produced to inform the next roundtable feeding into the design of the government's First Nations Clean Energy Strategy, being held in Geelong, Victoria on 27-28 November 2023.
