How do we create a society where more autistic people have access to meaningful and sustainable employment opportunities? I had the privilege of attending the launch of the Buckland review of Autism Employment today, hearing about 19 recommendations for how to make progress. Things that struck me: 1. This is a moral imperative. 70% of autistic people being out of work is staggering, and probably underrepresents the true number with many living with autism undiagnosed. Why should we accept this many people finding so many barriers to employment? (Answer - we shouldn’t) 2. Reasonable adjustments for people with autism, both through recruitment processes and once in work, needn’t be costly or difficult. The report highlights many examples that are not hard to implement 3. Employers, colleagues and candidates understanding each other better through being open is at the heart of making this work for everyone 4. Like lots of things in the workplace, a huge opportunity resides in line manager capability. Line managers understanding how to support autistic recruits and colleagues through learning will make a world of difference to the lived experience of autistic colleagues. Hiring Managers, HRs, considering youth specifically coming through in to your hiring processes (so school / college / university leavers). How are you finding your young candidates that are neurodiverse? Do you recognise them as such, do they share their ASD (if diagnosed or self diagnosed) with you through the process? Do you have support and experts available to refer to in general around this area, to consult, (legal and practical) to ensure you are being as inclusive, diverse and accommodating, as is appropriate, in order to hire the best person for the job? I would love to speak with Recruitment companies, Recruiters, Neurodivergent communities, Education institute leaders or senior SEN people, as well as employment law solicitors to gain a clearer picture on the current activity to address and support as well as the perceived or actual challenges in recruiting school leavers.
