The Legislative Liaison assists in the day-to-day operations of the Policy and Legislative Affairs (PLA) team of the department and leads many direct Tennessee General Assembly member outreach efforts and communications. The liaison cultivates meaningful relationships with elected officials and strategic partners across the state through effective communication, significant engagement, and transparency. The liaison works to amplify the policy positions of the Governor and the department to the General Assembly in order to secure alignment on issues related to preK-12 education. The liaison also works to inform and engage department content experts in the legislative process to support high-quality analysis and implementation of legislation.

Why do we need speech therapy and audiology in public schools? Speech therapists (SLPs) and audiologists work in special education with individuals, groups, and classes to enable our students from diverse backgrounds to communicate and ultimately participate in the classroom. We provide countless therapy minutes, notes, and IEP documentation/meetings. Due to funding, many of my colleagues are overwhelmed by their large caseloads, sometimes providing services for up to 70 or 80 elementary school children. Utah's H.B. 103: Salary Supplement for School Speech-language Pathologists and Audiologists addresses the gap for special education specialists by granting $4,200 of additional pay annually to certain educators, including speech therapists, audiologists, and life skills and resource teachers. On the other hand, H.B. 285: Labor Union Amendments would require unions to hold an election to re-certify every five years. This weakens the Alpine Education Association's ability to bargain on our behalf with the district. We would do our students a disservice by ignoring issues addressed by initiatives like H.B. 261, H.B. 103, and H.B. 285. I've included a link to today's legislative session below. If you can't attend, please write an email to your district's legislator encouraging them to vote for H.B. 103, vote against H.B. 285, and reverse H.B. 261. https://lnkd.in/gfiAvbAV #LivedExperience #HB103 #HB285 #Utah #Legislation #SLP #SpeechPathology #SpeechLanguagePathology #Audiology #Education #SpecialEducation #SpEd #DEI #EDI #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #Support
